MicroZed won't turn on

Hello,

I have a MicroZed Z7020 board marked "BD-Z7MB-7Z020-G- Rev-F01". I'm following along with the avnet "Developing Zynq Software with
Xilinx SDK" training, and i'm at the part in Lab 5 where I connect the board. I try to power it with a USB cable, and no LEDs come on.

I also tried to troubleshoot it and read the MicroZed getting started guide ( http://zedboard.org/sites/default/files/documentations/MicroZed_GettingStarted_v1_1.pdf )
as well as the Hardware Users Guide ( http://zedboard.org/sites/default/files/documentations/MicroZed_HW_UG_v1_6.pdf ).

I have Jumpers JP1, JP2, and JP3 all connected up high away from the edge of the board.

I don't have a JTAG cable yet, but I was just trying to power it on via USB @ J2.

Powering it via a USB 3.0 port doesn't turn on LEDs, nor does connected it to a 5V/1A phone charger.

Am I supposed to do something else first, or should the LEDs at least come on?

If you purchased the version with C01 in the part number, then your board won't work in standalone mode. Do you have the part number from your invoice? Do you have a carrier to plug it into?

I do not have the invoice, as it was given (or at least loaned) to me as-is. No extra parts, no SD-Card, no cables. Just the board. I don't think I can ask about an invoice either, since I was told it was purchased a while ago, but the guy never had the time to use it.

Is there a way to find out by inspecting the board?

I didn't specifically mention it, but I don't have a carrier or backplane-type device for it either.

I did notice, however, in the MicroZed Hardware Users Guide, in the Configuration Modes section (v1.6, pg. 21, 1st paragraph) it says:

"MicroZed allows 3 of those boot devices: QSPI is the default, while SD Card and JTAG boot are easily accessible by changing jumpers. The Cost-Optimized MicroZed removes the jumpers and replaces with resistors (described below) which default to QSPI boot mode."

I have these jumpers, and used them to try booting in JTAG and QSPI modes... hoping that even if it doesn't boot properly, that one or two LEDs would come on to let me know it is powered on and whether or not the power is good.

I'm not sure if a board w/C01 in the part number is exactly the same board as the "Cost-Optimized MicroZed" described here or not, but I figured I'd try and find out what I can on my own first.

On the box I received it in, it has a printed label that says "AES-Z7MB-7Z010-SOM-G", except that the 7Z010 is crossed out, and 7Z020 is written in, and it is, indeed the 7Z020, as seen on the chip.

That pat number indicates a 'standard' 7020 MicroZed. Just to confirm, there should be a sticker on the back of the MicroZed board with :BD-Z7MB-7Z020-G-" followed by a "REV-" with the board revision number.

If that is the case, even though the BOOT jumpers are set to JTAG mode, you should still see a green D5 LED light to indicate that the power supplies came up correctly. If D5 does not light when the micro-USB cable is connected to a suitable USB power source on J2 it looks like you have a problem with your board.

Correct. The sticker on the back is "BD-Z7MB-7Z020-G-" followed by a space and then "REV-F01".

Multiple power supplies (computer and cell phone chargers of different amp ratings) later, and no green light. No LEDs turn on at all.

Is there a way to get a replacement, or will I have to buy a new one?

If it is within the one year warranty period you can request an RMA from the source you bought the board from.
