Problem with Implementing Linux on the Zynq-7000 SoC (lab 4.1)

Former Member

Hi,

I've gone through both Speedways, (using version 14.4 of the tools), and had no problems until I reached Lab 4.1.

In this lab, I get no Ethernet connection. I then put the files from the lab-solutions onto the SD card, and saw the same behaviour (I believe this eliminates the tools version as the cause of the problem).

Here's the serial output (using the 'solution' files):

    Hi brendanlynskey,

    These three lines in your kernel messaging indicate you are trying to enumerate a PHY address that is not there OR the PHY that is at the expected address has some sort of hardware problem and cannot respond to the GEM.

    GEM: lp->tx_bd ffdfb000 lp->tx_bd_dma 1d762000 lp->tx_skb dd6f2800
    GEM: lp->rx_bd ffdfc000 lp->rx_bd_dma 1d761000 lp->rx_skb dd6f2400
    GEM: MAC 0x00350a00, 0x00002201, 00:0a:35:00:01:22
    eth0: no PHY found

    So your devicetree needs to have an entry like this:

    eth@e000b000 {
      compatible = "xlnx,ps7-ethernet-1.00.a";
      reg = <0xe000b000 0x1000>;
      interrupts = <0 22 0>;
      interrupt-parent = <&gic>;
      phy-handle = <&phy0>;
      xlnx,ptp-enet-clock = <111111111>;
      xlnx,slcr-div0-1000Mbps = <8>;
      xlnx,slcr-div0-100Mbps = <8>;
      xlnx,slcr-div0-10Mbps = <8>;
      xlnx,slcr-div1-1000Mbps = <1>;
      xlnx,slcr-div1-100Mbps = <5>;
      xlnx,slcr-div1-10Mbps = <50>;
      #address-cells = <0x1>;
      #size-cells = <0x0>;

      phy0: phy@0 {
        compatible = "marvell,88e1510";
        device_type = "ethernet-phy";
        reg = <0x0>;
        marvell,reg-init=<3 16 0xff00 0x1e 3 17 0xfff0 0x0a>;
      };
    };

    IIRC, that "reg = <0x0>;" entry tells the GEM driver that the PHY is located at MDIO address 0.

    Can you please provide a list of the files that you are using from the lab solutions?

    OR could you please confirm that you are using all of the following files from the lab solutions?

    boot.bin
    devicetree.dtb
    zImage
    ramdisk32M.image.gz

    Those are the bare minimum files that you need to boot Linux, and networking should work fine using the solution files.

    Regards,

    -Kevin

    Hi Kevin.

    Thanks for the response.

    OK, so running again, with the following files on the SD card:

    Hi brendanlynskey,

    Okay, I tried taking those same files you mentioned using the following files on the SD card:

    - devicetree.dtb from lab3_2_solution
    - boot.bin from lab2_3_solution
    - zImage from lab2_3_solution
    - ramdisk32M.image.gz from lab2_3_solution

    Here is the same section of console output that I get:

    TCP cubic registered

    / # eth0: link up (1000/FULL)

    So the most interesting lines to me are these two:

    GEM: phydev dd7a8200, phydev->phy_id 0x1410dd1, phydev->addr 0x0
    eth0, phy_addr 0x0, phy_id 0x01410dd1

    So this tells me on my board that the PHY ID reported is 0x1410dd1 and if I look to the Marvell 88E1518 datasheet I see that this value gets derived from the results read from the PHY Identifier registers.

    The upper word corresponds to bits 3 to 18 of the Marvell 24-bit OUI which is 0x005043.  The lower word corresponds to bits 19 to 24 of the OUI, plus a Model Number of 011101, and four revision bits.

    Looking at your output, I see something different in these two lines:

    GEM: phydev dd77a200, phydev->phy_id 0x0, phydev->addr 0x0
    eth0, phy_addr 0x0, phy_id 0x00000000

    This tells me that the PHY is not being accessed properly.  Could still be software related but now I am starting to lean more towards hardware related.

    Have you been able to use Ethernet from your ZedBoard with any other application code running?  If this is somehow still software related, something like the Digilent Out Of Box Demo SD card image should get your Ethernet working fine.  Can you try loading these files and testing Ethernet once again?

    http://www.digilentinc.com/Data/Products/ZEDBOARD/ZedBoard_OOB_Design.zip

    Regards,

    Hi Kevin,

    When I first started to use my Zedboard, the Ethernet port was working (I viewed the webpage).

    With the SD card image you provided, I see no activity. Here's the log:

    Looks like the Ethernet device is dead.

    So I suppose I need a replacement board. Would it be possible to contact David Gregg in the UK to approve this?

    Thanks,

    Hi brendanlynskey,

    Sorry to hear you are having hardware problems.

    If you purchased your ZedBoard from Avnet rather than Digilent, here is the email address you want to use to start the RMA process:

    em-web-messages@avnet.com

    Let me know how it goes.

    Regards,

    -Kevin

    Hi Kevin,

    I now have a replacement Zedboard with a wokring Ethernet port.

    Things look good until I try to browse the Zedboard's fs using SDK, which gives me error messages as follows:
       - Connect to 192.168.1.10 was cancelled
       - Failed to connect SFTP subsystem: Remote host may not have sftp-server installed: java.io.IOException: Pipe closed

    Here's the ZedBoard console, which shows that sftp-server is installed:
