Question Regarding MicroZED

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

Hi,
I looked at MicroZED and it looks like a very nice piece of hardware for beginners.

Well, But, I have a question regarding this board.

What is the programming interface of this board? Is it PC4?

In ZEDBoard, or ZC-702 or ... the interface is USB, thanks to the Digilent USB JTAG interface.

Now, for MicroZED, PC4????
Do you mean one needs a computer with Parallel port to program the board? Isn't that a little bit silly?

You are correct that MicroZed does not have on-board USB-JTAG circuitry. The reference to the PC4 is a reference to the 2x7 socket only, which is on the MicroZed and attached to the PL JTAG pins of the Zynq. We obviously don't expect people to use an old parallel JTAG cable. The Xilinx Platform Cable uses the same PC4 connection. The Digilent HS1 or HS2 also ship with an adapter that fits the PC4 socket. Since the Digilent HS1 and HS2 are faster and 1/4th the cost of the Xilinx cable, those are what we recommend. Avnet sells these cables along with a flex cable (AES-ACC-XP4-HS2) replacement for the rigid PC4 adapter.

    Hi,
    That is Perfect!
Just, can you clarify the items in JTAG chain?
So, through this JTAG connection I can both program and debug the PL (chipscope) and I can also handle the ARM sub-system (PS). Am I correct?
or for PS, there is another interface there?
    Thanks

Sure. This is documented in the Zynq TRM. The PL JTAG can be configured to be cascaded with the PS JTAG through a MODE jumper setting. This is the default for the board. In Cascaded JTAG, you can talk to both the PL and the PS.

You can also configure the MODE jumper for Independent JTAG, which separates the two. Then you can access the PS JTAG by reconfiguring your ARM PS MIO to expose the PS JTAG pins on the PS Pmod on ZedBoard. It is not common to do this, but it is useful in some situations, like if you wanted to do some more advanced things with tools from ARM.
