uart not functional in lab #5

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

I am going through the LABS - associated with the ZedBoard videos, I'm stuck in Lab #5  (LED controller)- with the UART not functional.

The Hello World example works - so i know it is not the HW, that appears to be working correctly.

I can step through th code, the IO Address appears to be correct, I think - that perhaps the UART is not being initilized correctly.

Q: I see the BREAK at MAIN ... but how do I BREAK at _boot (the code that runs inIs there a way to stop/break at the reset vector and begin to debug I want to step through the UART initialization

Or is it something else that is initializing the uart?

Q: When the code reads from the UART status register, Im seeing the return value of e00002c  [the value of the status register I believe]

Any suggestions on where to go next?

is the lab your are using from the Intro to Zynq video? If so the 'Hello World' serial output was directed to the SDK console while the serial output in lab5 should go to the USB-UART serial port. Make sure you set up the serial output as specified in the lab. You will need to have connected the ZedBoard USB-UART connection to a PC with a terminal program (like Tera Term or Putty for windows) and you need to have installed the driver for the Cypress USB-UART device on the PC. If you have done that and you still do not see the output you may need to enable the 'persist' mode on the Windows Cypress USB-UART device driver. Take a look at the answer here for instructions on how to do that if this is your issue:

    http://www.zedboard.org/content/problem-setting-sd

Otherwise you might load the solution file for lab5 to insure that you did not make an error in the lab somewhere that is causing the issue.

I had inadvertently added UART 0 in one of the earlier labs and exported it, and that UART was set as the STDOUT uart.
    .
UART 0 is not connected to the USB serial adapter, only UART 1
    .
I figured it out by stepping through the code, and looking carefully at the base address of the UART passed to the BSP functions, the address was wrong...

Second problem:  Which I have fixed -

The ZEDBOARD - running linux - seems to accept the TX data from the PC

But - when using the standalone BSP - the zed-UART can only transmit to the USB-UART - and *not* receive.

Suffice it to say, the IO voltage jumper was the problem.

Could you be more specific about "IO voltage jumper was the problem" ? I have the same problem you had, however I have not seen any jumper which could affect the usb uart...
