Ultra96v2 bricked

metaprog
metaprog over 4 years ago

Does anyone know what to do with such a case? Ultra96v2 stopped booting from an SD card, all LEDs turn on when pressing SW4 and then nothing happens. Looks like APU is not starting. Nothing is visible on the serial console. It's still possible to program the PL part over JTAG though. Sadly, https://www.96boards.org/documentation/consumer/ultra96/ultra96-v2/installation/board-recovery.md.html  is still empty, but the very existence of this document suggests there might be some procedure?

You could launch the Vitis SDK and try something simple like Hello World. In terms of damage, the most common ways that we've seen boards damaged is when either the JTAG/UART Pod or a mezzanine are plugged…

Something could be damaged specifically with the SD Card circuitry, but it is much more likely that you have multiple bad SD Cards. Do you have any others that you can try? Also, not all SD cards are created…

If initializing the PS over JTAG is failing, then you may have damaged your board.

    Thanks!

I tried 2 sd cards that used to work, to no avail. How can I quickly test PS over JTAG? I only tested PL (and it works).

What kind of damage is possible, to avoid such incidents in the future? It got bricked after I removed and replaced an SD card, but static discharge was very unlikely. This setup worked perfectly for quite a while.

You could launch the Vitis SDK and try something simple like Hello World.

In terms of damage, the most common ways that we've seen boards damaged is when either the JTAG/UART Pod or a mezzanine are plugged/unplugged while board power is connected. I've never heard of any issues with inserting or ejecting the microSD.

Like any development board with the PCB open, there is potential accidentally touch something that is exposed, but it sounds like you have been careful with static discharge.

If you don't think you damaged the board but it failed on its own and if it is within 60 days, you can get a replacement on warranty. See Warranty, RoHS, and Lifecycle for Avnet SOMs/SBCs .

Thanks, ran a "Hello, world" example and it works. I'm running out of ideas...

Something could be damaged specifically with the SD Card circuitry, but it is much more likely that you have multiple bad SD Cards. Do you have any others that you can try? Also, not all SD cards are created equal, as described here Storage Insights #1 - Why Not All SD Cards are Created Equal .

Also, not all SD Cards are going to work with Xilinx devices. We ship a Delkin card that we know works. If you have happened to corrupt that one and your back up is just a random one that you had floating around, it might not work anyway. This document is a few years old, but it is a great reference -- Avnet SD Card Advice for ZynqRegistered and UlraScale+Registered based Products .

Just confirmed - I somehow burned 2 SD cards (one of them came with Ultra96). Found another one, and now Ultra96 boots. Still worrying, but I guess the problem is not specific to Ultra96 itself, either a misfortune or a defect of the sd card housing. A remedy probably would be to avoid replacing sd cards with 12v plugged in.

Great news that you figured it out! I have hot-plugged the microSD on Ultra96, so I don't think that can damage the card, unless there is a simultaneous ESD event. However, low-quality retail cards are susceptible to corruption. The Delkin card that ships with the Ultra96-V2 is MLC-type, with a fixed BOM, so typically very reliable. I am sorry to hear that yours got damaged. You can purchase more Delkin cards through Newark or Premier Farnell. Look for Delkin Utility or Utility+. There are links at the bottom of Storage Insights #1 - Why Not All SD Cards are Created Equal .
