24 VDC Line 120 VAC Buttons?

I just realized that the terminals are for 24 VDC and most buttons I'm finding on the web are for VAC... I'm having trouble find VDC buttons... and forget about searching for DC buttons. Anybody have any advice on either using VAC buttons on a VDC line or know where I can find VDC buttons?

  • Just wanted to add a little more info to this Branch. I'm attempting to add a button control to my Grandfathers gate entry system. The gate controller has a 24 vdc out line for accessories but I'm not finding buttons on the web that specify VDC. So can I hook up a 120 VAC button on a VCD line or will that let the magic smoke out?

    Hi MrMiz,  It will not matter whether the button is rated for AC volts or DC volts in your circumstance. You can confidently buy which ever switch cosmetically fits your need. There is probably a convention for rating switches that uses AC as the test voltage and determines the point at which the switch fails. In your case there is too little voltage and current to get anywhere near a breakdown point. Pretty much a switch is a switch.

  • Without data, I wouldn't use a switch rated at 110 V AC much above 24 V DC.  Typically, they are rated much lower in DC service than AC service.  Check the datasheet.

    Hi Don, As usual you have a very good point. However, this thread was carried over from a previous thread and so I had the knowledge that the application was an electronic garage door opener and all he needed was a push button to toggle the UP - STOP - DOWN function. As such I saw no need to be too concerned with switch ratings. For the sake of those who may not know the context it is important to emphasize that switches that are used in large power switching situations, unlike this one, need to be properly sized to minimize arcing and premature failure.
