How do I program a Cypress CYBLE-214009 chip?

dominik.kania

Hello and thanks for stopping by.

I'm new here, currently prototyping an air quality sensor, based on a Cypress CYBLE-214009 processor.

So far, I have used the CYBLE-214009-EVAL evaluation board as an interface enabling me to program the chip. Now, I'd like to miniaturise the design and use only the CYBLE-214009 bluetooth processor (it's super small and has a buit-in BLE) on a customised board. However, I could not see a programming board from Cypress that would allow me to simply drop the processor on a socket in order to program it. Sure enough, Cypress advertises a development kit, but it looks like it does not have a socket that would allow me to simply drop in and program the processor itself.

Your advice would be much appreciated.

Regards,

Dominik

Normally your custom card would be designed to include a programming connector. As mentioned direct programming adapters can be expensive because it is hard to make robust connectors at the small pitch…

    Hello,

the PSoC4 BLE device can be programmed using MiniProg3, http://www.cypress.com/documentation/development-kitsboards/cy8ckit-002-psoc-miniprog3-program-and-debug-kit

If you plan to design your own board, you can place the 10 pin JTAG connector there.

Thanks David. I'm aware of MiniProg3 and should have better specified the question.

What I would like to know specifically is whether the following programming kit (http://www.cypress.com/file/304411/download) allows to program CYBLE-214009 or if not, what would be a suitable altetnative. I have reached out to Cypress but no news from them so far.

    Oh, OK.

According to CYBLE-022001-00, EZ-BLE PROC Module page, the mentioned kit CYBLE-022001-PROG EZ-BLETm Module Programming Kit is listed in Development Kits / Boards. So I would say it is supported, but let a Cypress employee / someone who actually owns the device to confirm.

However, the module programming kit still requires a programmer:

    Programming Procedure

    1. Connect the kit with one of the following three programming devices:
      1. BLE Pioneer kit (CY8CKIT-042-BLE)
      2. MiniProg3 (CY8CKIT-002)
      3. Third-party programming tool, such as MPQ-PSoC

And it is also listed in the document, you referenced. So I guess no more confirmation is required.

The EZ-BLE Module Programming Kit (CYBLE-022001-PROG) enables you to easily program the following EZ-BLE PRoC modules prior to manufacturing: CYBLE-022001-00CYBLE-022001-00, CYBLE-222005-00 and CYBLE-222014-01

Thanks again David, very helpful. The question is whether this programming kit also allows to program CYBLE-214009 which I think belongs to the same "family" but is not explicitly referenced in the support guide..

I am sorry, I was confused. You are right and I was wrong.

You are using CYBLE-214009-00 (size 11 x 11 x 1.8 mm) which is drop-in compatible with CYBLE-014008-00CYBLE-014008-00No information about compatibility with  CYBLE-022001-00CYBLE-022001-00 CYBLE-222005-00 and CYBLE-222014-01 found on the website these are 10 x 10x 1.8 mm So wait for the response from Cypress and if there is no programming module kit available / planned, you would have to go with the JTAG connector, as mention above.

If you plan to use a larger batch, they could help you with programming them in the factory.

David, just as an update - there is a bespoke programming kit that Cypress recommended for this specific chip. Not cheap at ~$250 but will last 10,000+ manual programming cycles. Thanks!
