Wireless relay control

To be honest, I am sure something like this exists, but I am have not hat the time to search it out.

I need a way to wirelessly turn on/off relays controlling AC mains at the light switch or wall socket point.

I could also use the power wiring as part of the control, so it does not have to be RF in any way.

One more catch, I want to handle several AC spots.

All thoughts accepted.

You can do it with Xbee's, http://www.adafruit.com/blog/2009/04/21/using-xbees-to-control-relays/

Or using the power wiring perhaps modulate a DTMF signal into the line and use a PIC to watch for its specific value and toggle a relay. or demod and use filters to isolate signal and trigger a relay.

At $10 a module, it is not that bad of a choice.

On closer inspection, I would like some other ideas.

I would like a wired option, since wireless is so susceptible to noise and obstructions. The place these relays will be placed will be very industrial.

Thoughts?

Mad idea but you could do this with a handful of shift registers, in a parallel-serial-parallel formation. Would just need a handful of switches to a PISO to act as a controller (or use microcontroller?) and then pass the Data,Clk,latch as a bus to each socket in a loop. At each socket use a SIPO register with a relay attached to a different output pin for each socket. I don't know of the enviroment your putting this into but 4-core would probably make a suitable bus, just need to manage the voltage drop over distance.
