Freedom Platform FAQ

Hi Everyone.

 

Please check out our FAQ on the Freedom Platform below. If you have any questions after reading this, post them below as comments to this document and we'll be happy to answer them for you.

Q) Why did Freescale change the picture of the Freescale Freedom development platform?

A) The initial picture was that of a working prototype.  The updated picture shows what the production boards will look like.

 

Q) Has Is the functionality of the board been affected?

A) No – the functionality stays the same.  The only difference is that some of the headers and connectors that were on the original board have not been populated.

 

Q) What items are not populated on the board?

A) The main items that have not been populated are the I/O headers and connectors.

 

Q) What do the I/O headers and connectors do?

A) Two of the connectors are used for attaching peripherals or Arduino shields to the board.  The other connectors are used for various I/O and test functions.  The exact details of these will be defined in the user guides and datasheet and will be published as soon as they are available.

 

Q) Can I populate the headers myself and if so, how can I order them?

A) Yes, the headers can be populated by anyone, taking into account any precautions one would normally take when modifying an electronic circuit.  Once the schematic is released, the list of connectors and headers and their part numbers will be given out as well.

 

 

Q) What changes took place?

A)  The board image given to us from Freescale and displayed on our web-site was a prototype.  The production version has the same functionality but does not have some of the headers populated. We will be shipping the I-O headers to all customers who pre-order the product at no cost to them. The SKU number has also changed from 05W3395 to  28W5033.

 

Q) Why was I notified that the previous SKU is obsolete?

A) That happened when we updated the product detail with the final production information. The new SKU number is 28W5033.

 

Q) Why was I notified that the new unit will begin shipping December 4th? Is it really going to take this long?

A) Because of the way we replaced the first SKU with the new one, an email was generated which incorrectly listed the new ship date as December 4. The first units will likely ship at the end of September. Sorry about the confusion!

    Hello John,

     

    First of all, sorry for my late answer, but there is many post concerning FRDM-KL25Z on the community image ... keep in mind that the FRDM-KL25Z KNODE PAGE is still the most updated one.

    I will try to answer all of your questions.

    If you preordered your board when the picture of the board with the white pcb and the I/O headers was published on the product page, you should receive a kit with the FRDM-KL25Z (black pcb and no I/0 headers) and the following connectors (to solder by your own) : 1x Samtec SSW-106-01-T-D, 2x Samtec SSW-108-01-T-D, 1x Samtec SSW-110-01-T-D, 2x Samtec TSW-102-07-T-S.

    The schematics and the I/O header pin assignments are available here on the knode

     

    Concerning the IDE tools, FRDM-KL25Z and Kinetis-L are compatible with the ARM ecosystem which means :

    - IAR Embedded Workbench for ARM 6.40.3 (free 16KB size limited KickStart or 30 day Evaluation versions) ... download page

    - KEIL MDK-ARM 4.60 (free 30 day then 32KB size limited version) ... download page

    - Freescale CodeWarrior v10.3beta (temporary free including Processor Expert) ... download page

    - Atollic TrueSTUDIO for ARM 3.2.0 (free 8KB size limited Lite or 30 day Evaluation versions) ... download page

    - GNU tool for ARM (100% free) ... download page

    Hello Luca

    You have right, there is an error in the product description for UK and IT product pages and I will ask E14/Farnell to correct it.

    I confirme that the same MCU target is soldered on FRDM-KL25Z for every countries, a Freescale Kinetis-L MKL25Z128VLK4, with an ARM Cortex-M0+ core, 128KB Flash, USB device and an LQFP80 package.

    In the product page the version of the freedom MCU is Cortex-m0+, but in the italian and english page (http://uk.farnell.com/freescale-semiconductor/frdm-kl25z/freescale-freedom-board-hardware/dp/2191861?Ntt=frdm-kl25z) where you can buy this product the MCU is Cortex-m0...is an error or in some country there is another version?

    I have pre-purchased two of these boards. I have since been looking at what will come with the kit when it arrives but do not seem to be able to ascertain exactly what is included, e.g. pin-headers for unpopulated I/O holes in the board.

     

    I am assuming that there will be a free (limited use/facility) development environement - is that the case - or will we be obliged to purchase such from, for example, Kiel?

     

    I am also assuming that a full schematic and I/O header pin assignments along with a detailed description of the board: its dimensions, hole positions, header positions and its functionality - is that also the case?

     

    Finally, where can I find a comprehensive description of the instruction set and an assembler, loader available over and above any C/C++ compiler, linker, loader?

     

    I am a returner who is a little out of date (more than 10 years) with modern development environments and purchased these boards due to their capability (so I am lead to understand) to emulate the Arduino platform with somewhat better performance and increased facilities. I am also a little uncertain about what to expect in this pre-order scenario and the lack of detailed information available!
