BBB Discussions moved again

morgaine
morgaine over 12 years ago

We now appear to have lost the BeagleBone Black section of knode discussions entirely.  (The blog still remains hierarchical per board.)

For the last week, our BBB discussions have resided in

Home >  the knode >  Single-Board Computers > BeagleBone Black > Discussions

Those threads have now been relocated to

Home >  the knode > Single-Board Computers > Discussions

URL: http://www.element14.com/community/community/knode/single-board_computers?view=discussions

In other words, there is nothing at all remaining to put these discussions into a BBB partition, group, section or community of their own, and the only reason why the Discussions listing shows all BBB threads is because nobody else within Single-Board Computers is currently posting anything.  The BBB threads listing will lose its focus on BBB as soon as some new SBC gains active discussions.

I really don't understand what appears to be a plan to defocus discussions about specific boards.  Very odd.  (Unless it's a bug of course.)  [Addendum: yes, it appears to be a bug]

Perhaps someone can explain the goals to us.

This is getting more bizarre by the minute.  This new thread I created turned up at

    Home > the knode > Single-Board Computers > BeagleBone Black > Discussions

    URL:  http://www.element14.com/community/community/knode/single-board_computers/next-gen_beaglebone?view=discussions

The new breadcrumbs are probably what was desired.  Unfortunately the update has partitioned any new threads off from all our previous BBB Discussion threads, which were previously moored at BBB but are now floating away free.  I suspect we're just looking at a bug here, ie. previous threads haven't be reparented properly.

While I'm noting forum funnies which are probably bugs, the BeagleBone_Black part of the URL has now reverted to next-gen_beaglebone, as in the blog.  It's a pretty good bet that this name change is the bug that has caused the previous threads to lose their mooring.

Yes I agree, I don't think it's intentional.  May be when Drew split the thread it caused the problem.

Perhaps the BBB discussions have evolved into a life form and is climbing the hierarchy till it eventually gets .... Home

    (sorry couldn't resist)

Yes, as soon as I saw where my new post appeared, ie. under BBB, it strongly suggested that this was not part of a design plan to defocus individual boards, but simply a bug.  Now we just need a flotilla of BBB-controlled drones to harpoon the errant threads before they float off into the sunset.

The drone power can come from mixing metaphors. image

Hi Guys.  We've been experimenting a bit with the way discussions about single-board computer discussions are categorized. Judging from your comments, our experiment has not been too successful so far! I'm sorry you're having a hard time finding your discussions. What should be happening is that your conversations about BeagleBone Black should aggregate up to all of single-board computers so they appear there, as well as on every other single-board computer space, like the SABRE Lite. But they should still be visible within the BeagleBone Black space where you posted them.  Let me look into this a bit + let you know what I find.  As always, thanks for your patience. :-)  Sagar

    Aha!!! image

    Thanks for this explanation, Sagar!

If I understood you correctly, what you're aiming to create is a hierarchical discussion space, in which at any given node of the tree all the discussions from nodes below appear together, but by descending deeper into the tree, anyone with a more specific focus will see only discussions for their particular board(s) of interest.  And posting at any given point in the tree will add the appropriate classification metadata so that this hierarchy is preserved.

If this is what you you're trying to achieve then it's admirable --- hierarchy is an engineer's best friend. image

As you say, "our experiment has not been too successful so far!" (hehe), but at least we know what you're trying to achieve.  Knowing this helps an aweful lot.  Nobody like bugs, but knowing that there is a worthwhile goal ahead helps alleviate the temporary pain.

I'm looking forward to this working as planned!  I'm also happy to help in testing if needed, perhaps in some fictitiious "E14 Test Board" area to avoid inflicting pain on non-testers?

    Morgaine.

Hi Guys.  I want to give you an update on where we are with this. As you know, we're trying this aggregation of conversations as part of a pilot to see how we can make content on element14 easier for people to find. I've spoken with our head of development about the confusion this has caused, and we are going to sort this out as part of a site upgrade which is slated to happen in early October.  I hope this helps! We definitely want element14 to be easy to you to use, and realize that our aggregation pilot may have caused some unnecessary confusion.  Cheers, Sagar
