BBB Switches to AM3358 ?

Former Member
Former Member over 11 years ago

It had been said since the outset that the BBB would switch to using the AM3358 at some point.  Looks like it's finally happening. I wonder if it's just coincidence, or has been driven by the current supply situation somehow.

Yep, that's my understanding too. As ethercat isn't useable on the BBB, likely no loss for the BBB at least.

If you look at http://www.ti.com/product/am3359, the AM3359 is only available in 800 MHz and 720 MHz.  BBB needs 1 GHz.

That I recall, that's always been the case.  Didn't Jason or Gerald say somewhere that TI were only making the 1GHz 3359 for the BBB ?

Not entirely sure I understand the marketing though. It's much more normal to see the speeds and features increase as you reach the top of the range, rather than having the second top outperform the flagship model..

I believe the AM3359 was used as a short term solution as there was limited amount of '59 1GHz silicon available at the time but the goal was to switch to 1GHz AM3358 as the 1GHz '59 was not going to be commercially available in qty.  My understanding is the only thing lost '59 -> '58 is EtherCAT.  Hopefully jkridner can correct me if I'm wrong.
