Double DRAM capacity on Beaglebone Black

Is there a demand for more than 512MB DDR3 memory on the Beaglebone Black?

Intelligent Memory is in production with 8Gbit DDR3 components with a single chip-select (part# IM8G16D3FBBG)  that would make it possible to upgrade the Beaglebone to 1GB by replacing the DRAM.

 

Surely it is not easy to de-solder the DRAM and put a new one on it, but if there was some demand in a 1GB version, then Element14 might offer a 1GB version of the BBB as an ordering-option maybe?

  • Is the RAM pin compatible with the currently installed ram chip, if not then it wont work without a PCB re design, assuming the CPU can use it also

     

    I have not looked into this yet so I an just speculating and prompting you do check if you have not already into a couple of possible issues with this

    Hi Peter,

     

    yes, it is generally pin-compatible.

    Address line A15 is used to reach the memory capacity. I just looked up the latest design file from March 21st 2014 and A15 is connected from CPU to DRAM.

     

    To access the 8Gbit memory device completely, the memory-initialization routine needs to be changed to use A0-A15 (total 16 lines) for the row address, instead of the current setting to use A0-A14 for 4Gbit DRAMs
