BBB - Restart SSH service (or even reboot board) from Cloud9 IDE?

Former Member

Hi, I hope you are all well.

Twice in 6 months, my BBB has locked me out of an SSH connection (standard Angstrom distribution, the only additions are lighttpd and PHP, using a static IP). The standard webserver on port 80 and a lighttpd server on port 6980 still work as does the Cloud9 IDE. The only way to get it back is a hard reset.

This normally wouldn't be an issue but I'm about to put a couple of these in a not-easily-accessible place.

Is there a way to restart SSH or even reboot the board from within the Cloud9 IDE? I could connect a "kill" circuit to one of the I/O and power cycle the board from Cloud9 but that's a bit messy.

Angstrom is being replaced by Debian as the 'standard' distro for BBB, see http://beagleboard.org/blog/2014-01-04-happy-new-year/

You might want to move to the Debian image before putting them into hard to get at places. See http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.hardware.beagleboard.user/63493 for details

However, if for some reason you're stuck with angstrom.. The problem you're seeing is a common one, the angstrom image is using dropbear and that seems to have been built in a way that causes it to be unreliable - dropbear itself should work ok, but something about how it's been integrated into angstrom is problematic.

Upgrading to a newer angstrom version may solve some of the issues, but doesn't seem to be a guaranteed fix.

What you can do is uninstall dropbear and replace it with OpenSSH, as it's package in angstrom seems to work properly.

You're lucky you don't have one of the earliest angstrom images, for me any attempt to ssh into the BBB caused dropbear to segfault so the only way in was via a serial connection to J1.

There's some discussion on BBB/dropbear ssh problems in this thread http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.hardware.beagleboard.user/44243 whether they apply to your situation is something you'll have to work out, but there's some scripts you can use through cloud9 that might be worth looking at, even if they're not directly useful they might give you some inspiration on where to start writing your own.
