Gizmo2: Adding external PWR and RST buttons

Introduction

In my previous post, I designed and 3D printed an enclosure for the Gizmo2. Unfortunately, this blocks access to the onboard power and reset buttons. So I searched for a way to have some external buttons which I could eventually mount to the enclosure.

Buttons

The process to find where I could connect my buttons to was rather simple actually. Using my multimeter, I searched for connections between the buttons and the JTAG debug port. I quickly found following mapping:

Using jumper wires, I made the connections with buttons on a breadboard and tested the setup. Both buttons work as expected image

image UPDATE: the two colored pins on the top row are actually connected, so they could be replaced by a single, common connection.

Demo

Here's a short video demonstrating the buttons functioning as expected:

I used my multimeter to find pins on the debug header directly attached to the buttons The schematics are also available, so I'm assuming the info should be in there as well.

    Frederick,

nice post and good video demo. At this point arise two questions: The first is why the debug port while there is a couple of specific pins on the PCIe connector of the Gizmo2 for the reset button and the power button ?

Then, I read somewhere else a note about your post always on Gizmo2 about an external power. Is there a way to find it somewhere? I have searched inside the Element14 posts by author but I found nothing.

Nice idea, especially if you cannot solder buttons in parallel with the on board power and reset.

Yes, the pin out is also in the schematic on Sheet 8.  http://www.gizmosphere.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/12/amd_gizmo2_sch_12_13_2014.pdf
