How to run ubuntu on BBB

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Hi,

I have a Beaglebone black board and want to load ubuntu on it. I followed the instructions on this page Beagleboard:Ubuntu On BeagleBone Black - eLinux.org and copied the image onto a microSD card, but because I do not have a computer monitor and keyboard that can work with the BBB, I am wondering now how I can access/verify the Linux on the BBB?

Thanks,

Olive

    Hi Olive,

    Your LEDs on BBB should glow(blue one)  first D1 and then D2.

    You can buy this cable -> Ftdi FT232RL FT232 USB TO TTL 5V 3 3V Serial Adaptor FOR Arduino BE0027 | eBay  and connect J1  Pin 1 , 4 ,5 to its GND, RX,TX (TX, TX order not relevant) and see the logs if it is really booting or not.

    You can also purchase a Mini HDMI cable to view wether you have successfully booted Ubuntu on it or not.

    You should try this link -> https://eewiki.net/display/linuxonarm/BeagleBone+Black

    Thanks and Rgds,

    H

    Olive,

    I can't remember at the moment if there is a USB way to log into ubuntu on the BBB.  But if you can plug in an Ethernet cable: one end of the cable into your BBB, and the other end into your home router, you can then run ssh (linux) or PuTTY (windows) to log onto the BBB.

    To find the IP address (required to log into the BBB), log into your home router and look for an option to see connected devices.  You should see a beaglebone device. note what the IP address is (example: 192.168.1.47).  Then log onto the BBB (with ssh):

    $  ssh ubuntu@192.168.1.47

    It will ask for a password, type the password (ubuntu).
