BeagleBone AI SD card boot

duyliontran
duyliontran over 5 years ago

Hello everyone,

I just started my BeagleBone AI and I discovered that I boots from the eMMC by default which already has a pre-flashed version of Debian. I want make it boot from my SD card, I followed this guide: https://dulirupanetti.com/?p=8337  but it still boot from the eMMC. Do you know anyway to change the boot to SD card?

Thanks and best regards,

           Duy

Hello every one, I changed to the SD Card to the new class 10 SD Card and it worked. There are 2 reasons: 1. I plugged the board in the USB 2.0 port. 2. My SD Card got bad sector. Thanks for your support…

There is no concept of a bad sector with a flash SD card. Depending on the brand and quality of the SD card, it may or may not have good wear leaving on it. A SD drive may have S.M.A.R.T. features, but…

My understanding is if the SDCard is setup properly and it's detected in the slot, then it'll boot from the SDCard. Are you sure the SDCard is imaged properly?

I am sure that it is setup properly and detected. If I plug it in before starting, it cannot boot. But if I plug in after booting, it can be recognized. I also tried to take the SD card from another bootable Beaglebone but the result is still the same.

    > If I plug it in before starting, it cannot boot

That sounds like the SDCard isn't imaged in a way the BeagleBone AI expects it to be so that it can boot.

What image are you using on the SDCard? What are you using to write the image to the SDCard?

https://beagleboard.org/getting-started#step1 shows how. Note you should see USR1 LED flash whenever IO is done on SD card. Also beware some flashed systems only write the info into EMC...

I use this image to write in: Debian 9.9 2019-08-03 4GB SD LXQT

and Win32 to burn it in. Is there any chances that my SD card got bad sector?

It's possible, it's also possible that win32diskimager doesn't write the image properly.

Also a stupid question, but are you extracting the .img.xz image before writing it? You should be left with only a .img file.

Try etcher at https://www.balena.io/etcher/ . It is easier and smarter in my opinion!

Could you share the output of running the following command:

    sudo /opt/scripts/tools/version.sh

How did you write the image on to the uSD card?

Also, you may want to look at post on the BeagleBoard Google blogs since this has been brought up numerous times in the past.
