What hinders your BeagleBone project?

cstanton

You could call this a series of discussions...

When I was first introduced to BeagleBone, the BeagleBone Black was just released, and I managed to kill it. 5 volts on a 3.3v logical input without being aware thanks to a devicetree not being updated for an LCD display, but I had no idea, I'd only just been given the hardware and I was entirely new to it. Completely killed the kit. Then there was the difficulty of working with assembly for the PRUSS... it was a long list of interruptions.

So what tends to stop you from developing with a BeagleBone? Do you find that you encounter a problem part way through the project? Is it some knowledge you're lacking or is it the software? Is it how the hardware behaves or doesn't how you expect it to? Is it the operating system when you want to work bare bones or bare metal with the hardware?

Would you benefit from help with Linux? Or is it something else?

We're looking at expanding our content and what we ask from BeagleBoard to help introduce their products and guidance on their products, and I'm interested in what you need help with, so reply and let us know, regardless of knowledge level.

I really like the beaglebone, same as Jan, my favorite SBC. I own many of them, several colors, bbb, bbg, bbbw, bb-ai, pocket beagle, even a beagleboard xm. The bbb is great for IoT and tinkering with…

In my case, the consistency of the project - to keep things up to date after relaease. BB is my preferred SBC. I work more on a Pi these days but I started with BB and it has a favourite spot in my heart…

For me, the rollover from µC to SBC (except for size) is when I'm building gateway/edge devices have database, or processes with a long lifecycle that are candidates for the likes of node-RED calculation…

Yes please. Things have moved on greatly since 8 years ago when much content was written on the BBB. It's hard to find new more up to date getting started guides.

Trying to determine which distro to use on BBB is tricky enough. Not every project needs all the bells and whistles of a full distro and every new distro is more bloated than the last. Just rooting through my box of SBC's I see SD cards for 2GB and 4GB were used back then. Not any more.

So what is the bare minimum, for example, if all you want to use the BBB for is an Internet gateway or an edge device with database for storage. Is this where the Linux Yocto project is meant to help, for example? What about openwrt? Is this worth learning about.

Then what about AndroidOS? If my smart TV is anything to go by then Android OS beats Linus OS hands down on the multi-media front and makes things simpler to download apps, for example, and possibly handling OTA updates. But then maybe BBB creates too many limitations with Android. I would certainly like to know how it compares. Which option works best for these ARM/TI based SBC's.

Are there any other suitable OS's out there that are suitable for edge devices.

Finally, as BBB offers realtime GPIO control, e.g. PWM, which OS works best as an interface with the real-time program, which could be written in C for example.

PS. Having written this, I have now discovered another build option... https://buildroot.org/

    hmmmm, very interesting.

Inspired by the intro from the embedded linux essentials course, I see MINIX 3 works on Beaglebone. Has anyone tried it?

    https://wiki.minix3.org/doku.php?id=developersguide:minixonarm

As per that page, it helpfully shows that MINIX does not work with spi, pwm, adc, and audio. I assume this is where your low level programming skills kick in to develop that software app yourself, using c language or equivalent.

Funnily enough, this looks to be the perfect starting point... or am I going to struggle here?
