OK. I'm getting to grips with Riotboard & Ubuntu. Still haven't solved the HDMI to VGA problem but I'm going to try a powered converter box.
I want to run IDLE but when I do I get an error about the DISPLAY environment variable..
I have heard about being able to run programs using X11 and tunneling with SSH on a host computer.. Does anyone know if this could be done with RIoTboard?? If they have or know if it's possible .......

Found a very nice beginners example of what can be done with Riotboard, Python & GPIOs here...
its all in Chinese and I wish I understood Chinese but the first program sets up a module to access the USER_LED and a second program controls the LED state on a screen button press.

Hi John Thanks for the info. . I've got Xwindows working. Its fantastic! A board running in tandem with my laptop and I have run some of the example X11 applications like the roving eyes an XMore but the most important for me at the moment is the IDLE python editor which I can now run. 
The link to the site mentioned above gives an example of what can be done with the Python TKinter library and the Riotboard LEDs.
I've got it running.
I've included a screenshot of the putty window & the X11 TKinter control panel
Now I can use python with the IDLE editor I've got some serious learning to do.
I want to find out about programming the RIoTboard audio in Python. 
I'd love to do a review but note: I not a seasoned pro in the embedded game. This is my first single board computer. I've had plenty experience with Arduino and AVR and some STM32 programming, all in C/C++. I was considering getting an R-PI but then I saw Riotboard...
I'll do a bit more learning and then submit a review .
