CadSoft forums now available on element14

ChristyZ
ChristyZ over 16 years ago

Greetings CadSoft users. The CadSoft forums are now available on www.element-14.com/cadsoft. Fear not, your beloved forums will remain available for you to access via your favorite newsgroup reader, but now you can also read and post to them via element14. Anything posted on one will sync and be avialable to users on the other.

We hope this will allow us to serve even more members of the engineering community and share with them the benefits of EAGLE.

Sincerely,

Christy Zurcher - element14 Manager

I think he was only referring to the discussion about the bugs and

behaviour of the gateways themselves, not the technical content related

    to EAGLE.

What is required is for everyone to communicate their issues directly to

Element14 and EagleCentral. This includes Cadsoft who should also be

sending them a strong message when they feed posting that are not clean NNTP

styled or have errors like those that attribute postings to others.

Very good points, I fully agree.

If something is to be reasonably displayed on various systems (forums vs. news

groups), IMHO it makes the most sense to use the least common denominator.

    And that is clearly NNTP.

    >

Anyway, as long as I have a say here, the CadSoft support groups' database

will be the NNTP server on news.cadsoft.de. Web forums may interface to these

groups and do their best to display the postings correctly and send their

postings to the news server in a proper way. However, there is only one

place that is the ultimate reference, and that's news.cadsoft.de.

    Thank you...thank you...thank you.

This business with Element-14 etc. has made some people nervous about

the direction of Eagle but more and more it seems there is nothing to

    worry about.

    Surely that is the point!

It's irrelevant which system is the best or the most preferred.

Both Element14 and EagleCentral built their web interface for their own

reasons, dare I say commercial reasons.

It is encumbent upon them to provide both a functional tool and support for

    any issues it has.

All the real issues are to do with them breaking the NNTP presentation or

failing to present an NNTP posting correctly on their site. In both cases

    it's their problem.

Both Element14 and EagleCentral can 'bling' their interface as much as they

like but they must process every post they take via their site and only feed

the NNTP with stripped data that simulates a direct post to the NNTP.

Because of this any item posted in Element14 should appear as an NNTP post

    on EagleCentral and visa versa.

Most of this discusion should not be here. Both Element14 and EagleCentral

should be hosting their own contact/discussion/support  forums about 'their'

    tool.

Element14 and EagleCentral . This includes Cadsoft who should also be

sending them a strong message when they feed posting that are not clean NNTP

It's probably not difficult, but many just don't want to. I did Usenet and

NNTP in the 1980s. Things have moved on since then, and I really don't

want to go back. In any case, you can't tell people what they want to use.

You can either accomodate them or not. If I remember right, the forums at

Eagle Central have over 5000 members. That's a lot of people that voted

with their feet. Whether they did it for silly reasons or whether you

    agree with them is immaterial.

Eagle Central seems to list anybody who has ever posted in news.cadsoft.de

as a member of its forum. So you may consider subtracting at least my name

from the member list. Maybe even Tilmann's and some more.

As I said before, that doesn't address the issues. You're still dumbing

things down to the level of NNTP, and things are still stored in lowest

common denominator form with information irreversibly lost. That would

    serve nobody's goal.

It would serve mine, if done correctly. Maybe even Tilmann's and some more.
