Help Optimizing

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I have been playing with Eagle Lite for over five years and have not yet

figured out what the Optimize icon (in the board editor) is supposed to do

or how the Optimize command is supposed to work. I read "Help Optimize"

again today, and looked in the manual. The text is plain enough...

and then I tried over and again to join two wire segments on a PCB.

Nothing happened.  I am left with an airwire.

Is there some special case or circumstance besides requiring the lines being

the same width and in the same layer? I can't do anything with it. Very

frustrating.

Any ideas what I might be doing wrong? Does Optimize work for other users,

or is that little icon sitting on my Eagle PCB console a Cadsoft prank? Naah

that couldn't be, and yet...

Thanks for any advise.

Thanks Morten and James. The "Help" text does not state that, as a

prerequisite the target wire segments must be contiguous as in overlapping,

but I suppose it should be "understood".

Actually, yesterday was the ONLY time I tried to "optimize" non-contiguous

segments; expecting an air-wire to get routed... which does not make much

sense now that I think about it. (That is what ROUTE is for.)

Naturally I feel somewhat stupid because all of a sudden it seems to work OK

on contiguous wire segments. HOWEVER I don't remember having any luck with

it before but I don't even remember the last time I tried. It was many moons

    ago.

I tested Altium and Protel and one of my biggest beefs with those products

was that while making library components I would very often wind up with

lines that were made up of many individual segments. It was very hard to

move things without having them break apart. Maybe there was an similiar

command available in those products, I don't know. Don't care.

I'll play around with Optimize some more and try to figure out what I was

    doing wrong.

    Thanks again.
