Merging nets in EAGLE

Former Member

I'm very new to EAGLE and PCBs in general. I'm just starting to try my hand with SMDs out of necessity - I want to integrate a Wiznet ethernet controller in to my project.

The reference schematics from Wiznet include some circuits that I can't quite make work in EAGLE. In this document: http://www.shopwiznet.com/lanotattachments/download/file/id/96/store/1/ on the second page (REV 2.0 1.8V circuit - I'm actually using a schematic from Sparkfun that's based off of the older 2.0 version) there's a circuit that has a supply wire coming from 1V8D and ending as 1V8OUT.*

EAGLE won't let that fly - it wants to merge those together in to one name no matter what I try. Am I missing something obvious?

Thanks for any help you can offer!

-Justin

*I'm honestly not sure what that circuit is meant to do; it seems like 1V8OUT should be out, not in - and wiring it to 1V8D seems strange to me, but that's what the document says.

    Hi Justin

Yes its a little odd but you see this kind of notation from time to time .

1V8OUT is coming out of the W5100. It's 1.8volts made from the 3.3volts. It

needs those conditioning components, external to the W5100, before it can

use the 1.8 volts (yep it goes back into the chip ) so just ensure you use

one name for the net and all should be well.

I'd consider using the Sparkfun  WIZnet W5100 Network Module with Mag Jack -

WIZ811MJ ( or other eqivalent ones, there are plenty around) in your project

to save some work and reduce risk if you are new to all this.

    All the best

    WArren

    Thanks Warren! That helps.

I thought about using the Sparkfun adapter, but those two rows of pins on each side are kind of a nightmare for breadboarding. I was hoping to make a simple module with just one set of pins that I could use more easily for prototyping.

I suppose I could just make a breakout board to connect the necessary pins from those on the Sparkfun unit to a more usable header. But building it from scratch is a challenge and that's kind of exciting. image
