Changing pin names

autodeskguest

Is there some way to change the pin names that appear in a schematic

after a large part, like a microcontroller, has been added from a

library?

The justification for changing pin names after adding a library part

is this:   Microcontrollers have many multi-purpose pins, and so the

pin names reflect many of those options.  For a particular

application, I would like to simplify the pin names to reflect the

configuration that this particular application will be using.

I know I could make a copy of the library part in my own custom

library and then edit the pin names there, but that seems like a lot

of trouble.  Have I missed something?  Or is this the only way?

You have to change the Symbol in the library and update it or

copy the whole device, change the symbol, and use the modified

    one.

If I can live with the pin placement of the existing uC part I change

the names of the nets attached to the uC to indicate how the pin is

used.  This is often one of the alternate pin names for the uC.

I then place a net label near the pin on the uC.  Not exactly what you

wanted but it works for me.
