Eagle Software

Greetings

My name is Brian, and I am a new user of Eagle, for right now the free version.

First question, is there any way to stop Eagle from carrying on point to point connections.   I am sure at times this is a very useful feature, but I need it to stop after automatically after it connects 2 points.   I hope this is possible, as if this is a persistent feature, it will really turn me off to Eagle.

But more importantly, I did a practice design and have a problem.

I am using a XF2H-3415 surface mount connector, .5 mm spacing.   I have a bit of a problem with the datasheet, as it doesn't clearly state the measurement units, but since the first page notes a measurement in mm, I'm assuming they are smart enough to carry those units throughout the datasheet.

Let me describe what I did, and perhaps did not do.

I have my board layout done, I have two 12 pin single row headers on each side of the board, and the other connector on the other side.   And I see the Ratsnest.

I think the pad color denotes side of board, but I'm not sure how to check or change that.

This is where the confusion starts.

I can't get the autorouter to start, and I come up with 34 DRC errors.

I'm a beginner, probably making a silly mistake, but Eagle also has a much more complicated set of DRC rules than I'm used to.

I have attached an image.

Help is most appreciated.

Thanks

    I may be attacking this wrong, but I need to fine position everything and get all my dimensions correct.

    I need to get two connectors aligned and get them spaced exactly 700 mils apart.

    BTW, you know you can display info about a part and type in the exact coordinates, right?

    Hi Doug

    For all my complaining and angst, I have made good progress today.   I am least to the point where I have completed an autoroute, now I can start going back and changing things and see where they screw things up, and know how to get back.

    Now, the stop function, if I have a button selected, say info, and I want to get everything reset so no button along the left hand side is active, the only way I see is to go to the upper toolbar and click stop.

    There doesn't appear to be a keyboard shortcut, like escape, or a de-select function.  I'd even be happy if it was added to the right click context menu.

    It may sound ridiculous, but this feature is annoying to me, because I find myself continually repeating a function I only meant to do once, and then go through the trouble of removing it.   In cases like that, an undo function in the right click context menu would also be extremely helpful.

    And one last thing, and I'm sure I'm not the only person who has complained about this.  And I'll get off my soapbox after this.

    Is there some reason that Eagle cannot open windows maximized, or at least remember last window size.

    This is extremely annoying.

    But I sincerely do appreciate your help.

    There are a lot of different ways to do things in Eagle.

    If you don't like using the mouse to click the 'Stop' icon you can type

    a semicolon in the command line and hit enter.

    You could activate the default Text menu and click on the semicolon it

    offers

    You could add a context menu so you can stop via a right click. Like the

    following one. Type this into the command line

    SET CONTEXT WIRE STOP ';';

    Now when you right click on a wire in the editor you set the context

    menu in you will see the selection 'Stop' . Click that to stop.

    You could assign a key to perform the stop

    Hi Brian,

    please go to the Options/Window positons... menu in the EAGLE Control Panel. There you can adjust the inital size and position of the editor windows.

    Concerning the Stop button: Well usually don't have to quit a command. Simply activate the nex command and it works. If you want to stop a command you could also use the  semicolon ;  in the command line.

    Hi Warren

    I'm actually impressed with this.

    SET CONTEXT WIRE STOP ';';

    But I would say some of these Eagle features should be more visible to the user.

    But here is another problem, and I can't even figure out why anybody would want it to work this way.

    If you place a hole or a via or a dimension, once you start, there is nothing you can do with the "mouse" to get it to stop.   WTF?

    I can understand why it has been broken down into these discrete steps.   Every designer is a robot trying to do things at the speed of light, and all those things being drug around will disappear as soon as you click on something else, so you learn to ignore it.

    I guess I need  a keyboard shortcut to get it to stop under those 3 cases.

    After that, where is the 1 hour webcast showing how to use the dimensioning tool, because I don't appear to have any control over what it measures.

    EDA software always has that remarkably charming characteristic of making you feel like an idiot trying to do something simple.

    What exactly are you trying to do with the dimensioning tool?  I've never thought of it as anything more than icing on the cake, just a way to put measurements on a page for a human to read...

    Maybe to aid placement, a quick check of board or edge-part spacing.

    I just don't see how it can be used for a quick a-b measurement.

    It seems to pick its own points automatically, or at least one of them.

    When I want to do a quick measurement, I just use the "mark" command.  When you place a mark, you get a display of relative coordinates right next to the cursor location display.  Read: MARK command You can use the "assign" command or the options-assign menu to tie the mark command to a particular key that you like.  For example:

    ASSIGN F12 'mark';

    If you want, you can even assign a key to stop marking:

    ASSIGN F11 'mark;';

    (Notice additional semicolon inside quotes.)

    It seems to pick its own points automatically, or at least one of them.

    If you read the help on dimension DIMENSION command you'll see that if you click on an object, EAGLE will try to guess what to do...
