Suggestions for Text Editor for Professional Use

Hello everyone,

I figure some of you out there do some serious text editing.  And now that

EAGLE can use an external one, this is at least sort of relatively topical

image  Does anyone have one they would like to suggest?

I'm not interested in why vi is better or emacs will save your soul type

of flame wars.

Here are my criteria:

1)  Native binary for Windows and Mac (Linux is a bonus)

2)  Column editing

3)  Syntax highlighting for c, c++, verilog, vhdl, css, html

4)  Pretty/auto-formatting tool for languages above, preferably across

project at once.

5)  Built in diff tool would be great.

I don't mind paying for a tool if it works and there aren't any other

options.  Of course, less money is better.

I've been considering SlickEdit.  Is there someone out there who has used

it extensively and be willing to share their experience?

Cheers,

James.

Editors are a very personal preference thing - why else would you be

afraid of Vi / Emacs flame wars! I've not found the perfect editor, but

the following fall short of your list in one way or another:

Nedit     - a lovely editor but X11 based so not Windows

Notepad++ - does most of what you want, on Windows

       Editra    - a quirky Python-based multi-platform editor

Evergreen - many of my colleagues like this one

UltraEdit is great and can do all the things that you mention among others.

I'm using MED (commercial) for programming and PsPad (free) for

general tasks, but I made this decision many years ago and both are

not available for OS X. See

    http://wiki.oliverbetz.de/owiki.php/TextEditors for a list of

texteditors. I don't maintain it actively anymore so let me know if

    there is outdated material.

    Here are my criteria:

    1)  Native binary for Windows and Mac (Linux is a bonus)

this will cut down the list dramatically. UltraEdit is worth a look.

    2)  Column editing

    3)  Syntax highlighting for c, c++, verilog, vhdl, css, html

    4)  Pretty/auto-formatting tool for languages above, preferably across

are you sure that the beautifier should be part of the editor?

    Consider using an external beautifier.

    5)  Built in diff tool would be great.

I don't use the built-in diff tool since I prefer Beyond Compare.

Because you need OS X support, I recommend to try at least EC Merge

I use SlickEdit, and it is fine, and does most of what you are talking

about. MultiEdit is worth looking into as well. I happen to like it

better that SlickEdit, it's license is a better arrangement. The problem

with Multiedit is that it is windows only. I don't think either

MultiEdit or Slickedit is available on MAC.

Multi-edit integrates with Beyond Compare for a comparison tool - there

is not a better comparison tool out there. No matter what editor you

choose, I think you will want this to go along with it. Beyond Compare

is available on windows and linux. Well worth the small price they

    charge for it.

although that's rather OT now, did you compare Beyond Compare to EC

    Merge or Araxis Merge?

choose, I think you will want this to go along with it. Beyond Compare

is available on windows and linux. Well worth the small price they

But not for OS X - EC Merge and Araxis Merge (expensive) are available

    for OS X.
