Suggestions for Text Editor for Professional Use

Hello everyone,

I figure some of you out there do some serious text editing.  And now that

EAGLE can use an external one, this is at least sort of relatively topical

image  Does anyone have one they would like to suggest?

I'm not interested in why vi is better or emacs will save your soul type

of flame wars.

Here are my criteria:

1)  Native binary for Windows and Mac (Linux is a bonus)

2)  Column editing

3)  Syntax highlighting for c, c++, verilog, vhdl, css, html

4)  Pretty/auto-formatting tool for languages above, preferably across

project at once.

5)  Built in diff tool would be great.

I don't mind paying for a tool if it works and there aren't any other

options.  Of course, less money is better.

I've been considering SlickEdit.  Is there someone out there who has used

it extensively and be willing to share their experience?

Cheers,

James.

I'm using MED (commercial) for programming and PsPad (free) for

general tasks, but I made this decision many years ago and both are

not available for OS X. See

    http://wiki.oliverbetz.de/owiki.php/TextEditors for a list of

texteditors. I don't maintain it actively anymore so let me know if

    there is outdated material.

this will cut down the list dramatically. UltraEdit is worth a look.

    2)  Column editing

    3)  Syntax highlighting for c, c++, verilog, vhdl, css, html

    4)  Pretty/auto-formatting tool for languages above, preferably across

are you sure that the beautifier should be part of the editor?

    Consider using an external beautifier.

    5)  Built in diff tool would be great.

I don't use the built-in diff tool since I prefer Beyond Compare.

Because you need OS X support, I recommend to try at least EC Merge
