Layers in Standard (Hobbyist) Edition

Hi Gary,

I hope you're doing well. To enable the extra layers, go into the DRC>

Layers Tab and then adjust the setup equation for the additional layers.

Simplest example for six layers would be:

Frankly, this is among the very worst PCB programs I've ever worked with over the past 20 years. Absolutely horrible.

Obviously, instead of re-writing between versions they must cut and paste from prior versions. Either that or they can't be bothered with studying the prior art. This results in a non-intuitive, disjointed, inconsistent interface.

The "help" is a complete waste of time. It states the obvious but with as few lines as possible.

I am looking forward to moving some new customers off this disaster and onto my real PCB design program. It costs a lot more, but it's well worth it compared to this unbelievably bad program.

No, it results in a consistent, flexible, intuitive and powerful

interface for those who can be bothered to learn it. The so-called

"prior art" is mostly unusably crap and every time Cadsoft bend to the

irrational clamour of unreasonable people demanding "more Windows-like"

the result is a mistake. Fortunately, Cadsoft usually allow users to

revert to the better, original version.

The help in Eagle is a million times better than the help in most

applications. It's one of the best I've ever encountered. Largely

because, unlike ALL the rest, it doesn't just state the bleeding obvious.

So you're actually a vendor of an over-priced competitor tool? Spreading

offensive FUD in a misguided malicious smear campaign as part of your

marketing policy? Is that what you're telling us?

Your temper-tantrum only proves my point. Written by non-pros as I suspected.

Luckily, I only got this to help some local kids build their school project and I don't actually need to rely on this.

Here's a perfect example. Suddenly, the product crashes. Then when I try to reload it and open the same schematic, it displays:

"Loading C:/School/Projects/PCB/eagle/anadig.sch ...

Warning(s):

line 11443: invalid value '' for attribute 'name' in tag <net>

Error:

line 11452, column 6: invalid/missing attribute 'name' in tag <net>"

It has no mechanism to get past this. So that's the end of that schematic, I guess. Very unprofessional. No excuse for this type of behavior. A pro would've fixed the file with a placeholder or temporary tag so that the work could be recovered. Or at the very least, prompted the user to enter a value. Or opened the schematic but deleted the part associated with the fault. Or about 10 other things. But not this product -- end of schematic.

OK, you want to keep this professional, so let's not rant about a user

interface that you dont care to spend time learning. You will upset a lot of

the old stayers by claiming Eagle is crap.

Believe me, Eagle is very powerful for its use and a lot of value for the

money. Besides, the support you get (for free!) is beyond comparison. Eagle

is not perfect but you will love it if you care to learn it. You will get a

kickstart if you learn its history since the command line days. It has kept

its command line backbone, but added GUI ways to execute the commands. It's

not a fully windows-accent gui environment, but rather multi platform, as

Eagle runs on both Linux, Mac and Windows.

The error you quote is obviously a bug or some corrupted project. I'm sure

it can be fixed, and Im even sure someone at Cadsoft will offer you to

repair it, and it surely won't cost you a yearly service agreement fee. A

volunteer on this forum community may even offer to fix it for you if your

approach is a bit friendlier.

Your faith in this mystical "pro" astonishes me. I've used Microsoft

tools! And Orcad, and Matlab/Simulink, and all those other very

expensive professional tools. None of them do any better at this than

Eagle - most worse.

You can accuse me of temper tantrums all you like - without the

slightest justification, since you were the first to throw one - but it

makes no difference to the fact that the holy grail you seem to expect

from over-priced software does not exist in the real world. In my many

years of using computer software the one thing I have absolutely found

is that

    You DON'T get what you pay for

You want a program that allows a recovery mechanism for a corrupted file

(which clearly is what you had)? Use one with a plain text format

(Eagle's is now XML, which isn't perfect but...) and/or open source.

Yes, that's right, the most likely programs to survive bad files are the

FREE ones!
