gerbv, the free and opensrc gerber viewer

Not all of you may know this, but I found this free open source gerber

viewer that seems to work nice.

http://gerbv.gpleda.org/index.html

From the overview:

-Gerbv is a viewer for Gerber RS-274X files, Excellon drill files, and CSV

pick-and-place files.

-Gerbv is a native Linux application, and it runs on many common unix

platforms.

-Gerbv is free/ open-source software.

-You may download the source code from this page.

-The core functionality of gerbv is located in a separate library

(libgerbv), allowing developers to include Gerber

parsing/editing/exporting/rendering into other programs. Documentation for

libgerbv is here.

-Gerbv is one of the utilities affiliated with the gEDA project, an umbrella

organization dedicated to producing free software tools for electronic

design.

-The latest official gerbv release is version 2.3.0, released on 2009-07-11.

Gerbv is good. For those on Windows machines there is also a free viewer

from http://www.pentalogix.com/ where they also sell fancier versions

    for $.

Pentalogix ViewMate is known for several bugs and incorrect display

    under some circumstances.

I prefer GCprevue (also free) which has worked fine so far - including

with those files that failed with ViewMate.

And for all the Mac users out there, I recently got gerbv running on my

Intel Mac using a package called fink.   The version I have has an older

version of gerbv but I think I saw that the latest fink has 2.3 of gerbv.

This is the first useful gerber viewer that I've been able to get on the

Mac for free.  It does use X11 but it's better than nothing.

    Cheers,

    James.

    GC-Prevue for Windows.

Ok, I should specify. I remember fiddling aroud a bit too to find the

windows executable.. The thing is that they are right there in front of

you.. Follow the link down to Archives.

    You will get to

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/gerbv/files/gerbv/gerbv-2.3.0/ wich is

    window executable.

Yes....I did not mean to imply that it doesn't ..only that ViewMate is

not (to my knowledge) not available for linux/mac.

    Hi Tilmann...

I would be interested to know what bugs and incorrect display you know

about for ViewMate (and which version of Viewmate).     I have

definitely seen ViewMate generate some weird displays but these always

turned out to be due to my incorrect configuration of the settings

    during the gerber file import!

I don't remember the details... Some files were displayed incorrectly

with ViewMate, though they were correct - and also correctly displayed

with other viewers like GCprevue. Maybe these bugs were fixed later, but

    this impression is somewhat persistent...

That generates weird displays with GCprevue, too. Especially incorrect

automatic format detection gives funny displays sometimes... image

P.S. Please correct your quoting order. Thanks.

Thanks for the MacPorts hint.  I think I'll try that out.

If anyone is involved with the gerbv development, it would be highly useful

to have the layer manipulation buttons to turn all layers ON or OFF and to

toggle all layer visibility.  ViewMate has these and I use them all the

time.  Usually I am looking at one layer relative to another.  So the first

thing I do is turn them all OFF then turn on a specific layer.  In gerbv, I

have to uncheck every layer first to get to a blank slate.  With a 10 layer

board that is a lot of checking.

    Cheers,

    James.
