Sneak peek: obstacle avoidance and walk around routing in EAGLE v8...

technolomaniac

Hi Folks --

Just a (very quick) sneak peek at obstacle avoidance and walk around routing, coming in the new EAGLE version 8!  To be sure, the ability to prevent shorts before they happen is critical to EAGLE users' productivity.  This new routing engine, coming in EAGLE v8, follows the design rules and will walk around objects, making you both more productive and less prone to costly errors.  What's more, it's fast!  This clip isn't sped up.  This isn't "follow me" 2.0.  This is a completely new engine with some of the best underlying algorithms in the industry.

We would love to get feedback on what you need to be more productive in routing your PCBs.  Your feedback will help us prioritize our development and ensure we release new features in the right sequence (where possible).  To get the new router, subscribe today!  For $100/year, you'll get EAGLE v8 Standard edition, 4-layer commercial license and ensure you get the new router when it's available.

Best regards

Matt - Autodesk.

    Hey Matt,

This looks nice, it'll be great when I can get my hands on it to see how it's like to use in the real world of course, but it looks really promising from the video above image

I think something that will really speed things up when combined with the above is a much improved net class system which allows accurate specification of net classes with the ability to specify what layers are available for each class and the trace widths and clearances per layer (so you can set up impedance controlled traces better, maybe even provide some tools which integrate with the PCB layer stack and enable the target impedance to be specified and give recommended trace widths) and then have this feed into the router so that it automatically switches to the trace width you need for a particular net on a particular layer as you switch layers (although it should be able to be overridden e.g. so you can route into an IC properly). I have a long list of ideas for EAGLE btw image

    Best Regards,

    (1) First rule broken: Forum postings shall not be advertising,

    promotion or construed as spam.

    (2) Second, the statement is misleading and illegal in many

jurisdictions. Nearly all of us would be allowed to write that string of

words as it would be hearsay or conversational but Matt, being an

Autodesk employee tasked in marketing, cannot say it without exposing

Autodesk and himself to a legal challenge. The first sentence is an

offer and the sole condition is "subscribe today!". The second sentence

attempts to opt out of that first sentence contract.

Many of you will understand the point I'm attempting to highlight here.

@Warren - Autodesk operates the NNTP servers on which this forum is based, whether here, on Autodesk.com or behind Eaglecentral.ca.  We have discretion in how we use this or other Autodesk forums.  If you prefer not to receive messages about what is coming in the software, you do not have to receive emails for all posts.  You can configure that under the user settings.

FWIW...It has been a long tradition amongst Cadsoft and now Autodesk to try and highlight what is coming and get feedback.  If you prefer not to participate in that, you are welcome to your opinion.  Again, you can disable notifications if you prefer not to receive these messages.

Autodesk actually owns the servers on which this forum operates,

whether here, on Autodesk.com or on Eaglecentral.ca.

Wait.  What?  I thought EAGLE Central was Stratford Digital...?

And what about Element14?  Do you own them too?

Matt, while I think I understand what you're trying to say, this comes

across, at least to me, as a bit threatening.  Are you trying to scare us

    oldtimers away?

Im not being at all threatening.  I'm saying that we reserve the right to discuss new features and in fact, the OP was where the "threat" came from, veiled as a legal argument for why it wasn't ok to post about new features.  I replied decently and fairly.  Never has anyone challenged the Cadsoft team for posting anything about new features or planned features and soliciting feedback.  Even marketing messages (I'm in Prod Dev btw) have gone largely unchallenged.  This is a forum to discuss EAGLE and we are soliciting feedback on a version of EAGLE that we both released and which is in continuous development.  This is the new version of EAGLE we are discussing and not attempting to peddle 'foundation garments'.

Please afford autodesk the same courtesy you would Cadsoft as the staff from Cadsoft are all employed with Autodesk today...and do so without taking a position on the legality of a comment you and no one ever in history complained about in the past.  This is unfair and not in the spirit of the community.  There's a separate thread about licensing if that's the central source of your frustrations.  Let's not conflate this discussion with a cross-post about what may in fact be fueling your unpleasantness.

    Have a great weekend!

    best regards,

I'm glad for that.  My questions about the ownership of Eagle Central and

Element14 still remain.  While I completely believe that you can do

whatever you wish on the autodesk.com forums and any email list Autodesk

manages, I'm not sure you have the same mandate elsewhere, specifically

these two sites.  Put another way, would you post this kind of thing on

EEVBlog or the EAGLE Yahoo group?

Matt, what do you know of the spirit of our community?  It would be nice if

you would treat those of us who were Cadsoft customers with some courtesy

as well.  We've been around a long time and you have swooped in and pissed

    in our punch bowl.

Was I just dismissed?  Is that the end of the conversation then?

    Hi Matt

    You have misinterpreted my posting.

I apologise for saying you are tasked in marketing if that is not the

case, I understood that to be the case from earlier threads

My point was, I felt you had breached the globally accepted etiquette

for forums. Simply, it appeared you had not taken care in choosing what

    to write.

Perhaps others will have different views but I have never felt, over the

past nine years that I have participated in these forums, any posting by

a Cadsoft employee that was marketing.

Prior to a CadSoft release, information on new features was guarded.

Upon release the web advertising told the story of staring features.

Employee forum postings seemed disciplined and were limited to "Version

released, down load from www.cadsoft..."  or responses to threads that

guided you on where to go to get assistance on editions or pricing.

Hence I think you are right as I don't recall anyone saying the Cadsoft

staffers were misusing the forum for marketing.

This is an old thing. Other tools have it build in as standard since many years.

And we asked many years for this kind of router.

And also more. Where is the button for impedance controlled routing? for bus routing?

We not just have microcontrollers (like your shown example image), but also we have PCB with microprocessors and they have a complex bus structure.

And the free version have not this router?

After expiring the license period the Eagle will falling down to a toy, and then we can not use this router?

It seems all of it grows more and more in a Desaster.

One sentence here one sentence there, then all of us can not follow the concrete reasons or causes.

    Best Regards

    Gerald
