Better Eagle zooming with trackballs, how?

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 10 years ago

Just switched to a Logitech T-BC21 trackball because it's much easier on

the wrist. And dog hair from our Labradors does not get in so easily image

How can one zoom better with trackballs which do not have mouse wheels?

I assigned the two back buttons to F3 and F4 so zoom essentially works.

But not nearly as well as the mouse where the wheel will zoom into

wherever the pointer was. Unfortunately in Eagle F3/F4 are

"pointer-insensitive" and thus do not zoom centered at the pointer or

cursor.

Does anyone know a trick how to emulate a mouse wheel with a trackball?

Like CTRL + roll the ball? Despite being very bloated the Logitech

configuration download does not offer this.

    Hi Joerg,

with the "Logitech SetPoint software" it should be possible to adjust

    the trackball.

Another thing is: Could it be possible that the trackball has a lower

    dpi than  your mouse?

You just got the wrong trackball.

Unless you're left-handed, the M570 is the one to go for.

Turning the ball with the thumb is much more comfortable - and that one

    also has a wheel...

I downloaded that rather bloated SetPoint software. Over 80MB

(megabytes!) but not much to write home about. I does not let you fully

emulate the scroll wheel of a simpe mouse which was quite disappointing.

Zoom neither works in Eagle nor in Foxit.

No idea but otherwise it works just as well as the mouse.

With that one people reported the same kind of problem on the web.

I really prefer index and middle-finger instead. Maybe because I ride to

much mountain bike where those fingers are always on the brake handles image

The other reason is that I sometimes use the trackball (and mouse) on

the right, sometimes on the left.

I don't ride my mountain bike often (or at all, these days) but I too

find the fingers much more dexterous with the ball than the thumb. I

detest the thumb track-balls with a vengeance.

I believe they are also less healthy because you'd then mostly bend the

thumb back and forth. That can foster carpal tunnel disease. With the

    fingers my whole hand moves.

But not having a working scroll function is a major setback. I'll have

to mount a mouse on the other side or something, just so I have a scroll

wheel. Eagle is tough to use without that. I wish there were Eagle hot

keys that, unlike F3/F4 would zoom into where the cursor is and not

always assume one wants to zoom centered.

I am also wondering how long those little plastic knuckles of the

Logitech rackball will last that the red "marble" ball glides on.

Probably because of mountain biking I often use a lot of force with my

hands and have worn out several keyboards.
