Devices on Schematic, but not on PCB

Former Member
Former Member over 15 years ago

How can I have devices on the schematic diagram, but not on the PCB ?

On my schematic I want to draw some devices who are external to the PCB,

essentially to have the complete thing on the same diagram. Some of the

devices are external to the PCB. What do I have to do for Eagle to know

about that and not to insist the I place an route them ?

Define a new layer >100 (e.g. not-on-brd or similar) & draw your parts on

that layer. It is also possible to create a new lbr if some parts are used

very often. I made such a lbr, if you are interested, send a mail.

So, if I understand you correctly I have to create special devices in a

special library where I define the pins and stuff in a layer which does

not show up on the PCB/brd ?

Is there a way to just move the devices I have now to such a layer,

    without starting from scratch ?

You can move the devices to the new lbr & then change their layers to the

new one - I use layer 120. Use no packages. See the attached picture.

i'm not sure what the point in using a separate layer is. You can draw your

stuff in any symbol layer and just leave out the packages.

    Good idea.

I've been putting the 'off board' parts (transistors on external heatsinks)

on the usual layers and just not routing them. I put a dotted line around

the board and place these parts outside the dotted area. The Readme file

that accompanies the board release tells the assembly house to ignore

everything outside the dotted line. The BOM will show the off-board parts

and we include any exceptions in the readme.

Changing the off-board components to another layer will just require some

modifications to the display aliases (calling out layer combinations in a

given display view). This is called out along with layer colors and other

options in a modified 'mylayers.scr' script.

I will just reiterate my support for adding this capability in EAGLE so

that the off board components and their connections can be documented,

edited, moved like normal ones. There is more to schematic capture than

producing a board. There could just be an off-board native package

entity that is a null package and EAGLE ignores all connections to it. A

native off-board layer would also work, neither requires changes to the

UI and would make the capability available for those who desire it.

I tried this, create new symbol & device in a library, but without

package. But when I want to add this device to my board I get the error

    'Device has no Package'.

Does your device have any pins? If so, it will probably expect a package.

devices without package can only be added to the schematic, not the

    board.

yes I know, but the OP wrote "But when I want to add this device to my

board I get the error 'Device has no Package'"

So I pointed that out again

Yes, I found that you can not have pins, that means I can not just copy a

symbol to a library, remove the package and use it. You have to remove

    the pins too.

For now I have placed the drawing into layer 97 (info). From scratch with

    no library involved.
