Finding disconnected nets

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I have some disconnected nets that are so small I can't find them.

Being new to this tool, I assumed I could highlight them with SHOW,

but I can't see anything highlighted. So I tried to use the LABEL

command from the text entry window, but I can't find a syntax that

does not give an error. I tried changing the width of the net, nothing

changed. I am really stumped. How do you find small disconnected nets

and delete them? I know their names from the rules check, so there

must be some simple command to just delete them.

You din't mention sch/brd nor which version.

Try command "show @ netname" that should draw a box around the net

    (assuming ver. 5.11.x)

    Joern,

    It is 5.11.0 Mac. Schematic.

I tried show @ netname, and it draws a box around the whole page, not a

single net. Also, when I run error checks, the dialog box lists these and

other errors. Other errors I can double clock and it does a show, and

properly puts a box around the error. The disconnected net errors do not

    behave this way.

Try to move (F7) your nets. If there is an unconnected stub, it will show,

    so you can delete it.

    Ok, I typed:

    MOVE N$101

    Got message:

    Unknown part N$101

What is the syntax that tells the command line N$101 is a net?

I tried MOVE 'N$101' and MOVE NET N$101, etc

There must be some syntax that tells it you are acting on a net rather

    than a part.

The doc on move does not seem to imply you can move a net.

It is better to click with the mouse into a net & move it. so you can see

    any stubs.

I have moved every node and every part and there are no stubs, but the

error check still says I have disconnected nets. My assumption is there

    is a small island of wire somewhere I can't see. When I do a SHOW @ N

$XYZ, where XYZ is the node, I get a box around the whole page, but 4X

bigger than the schematic. It is so big that I can't unzoom to see the

whole box, rather than a stub. I am wondering if I have some island of

trace outside the schematic area that is causing the box to misbehave.

So I am stuck and not sure how to find it. Seems there needs to be a

simple command that says DELETE N@XYZ to deal with this.

Also, I have about 8 of these. It is hard to imagine getting 8 islands

of wire I can't see. So I am wonder if there is a bug and I have some

habit of wiring parts that trips it up.

You are in SCHEMATIC using ERC not DRC? Then I don't think you have

airwires. These are a similar problem that comes from incomplete routing

    of a net.

so let's see, if you are really in schematic only, you need to know that

EAGLE doesn't actually require a net to connect to anything. If you have

a dangling net, that's not an error, in fact you can use the NAME

command on such dangling nets to make connections. There is no special

symbol in EAGLE to connect a net to another, just give them the same

name. But, I don't think this is what you have, I think...

Maybe you have run into EAGLE's "implicit nets". Say you have a device

and it has a pin for power, the name in the library (yes library) for

that power pin is the net it will connect to! If you don't have that net

anywhere in your schematic ( usually tied to "supply" symbol) then the

net is not connected anywhere and should warn or error on ERC.

I think v5 has a way to turn this behavior off. ( how would you know

what net it connects to when you make the library anyways?). but I would

look at your device's pins for those with direction==power or supply and

make sure you know what your doing.

HELP PIN for some more info about implicit nets or look it up in the

Manual. I personally hate this behavior and I do not use the Sup or

Power pin directions. I feel the chance of it connecting something I may

not want connected is too high.

    hope this helps

I never encountered an ERC warning with "disconnected" though.

The problem went away. I had rebooted my Mac yesterday, and now the problem

is gone. I created an error just to be sure the ERC actually ran, and all

the disconnected nets are gone, so I can't give the precise error until the

    problem occurs again.
