Preventing stubs

Often when routing wide (.04"+) traces I'll end up with a stub where the

end of one trace extends beyond the edge of the one it's joining (see

above).  Is there a way to fix or prevent this?

    That happens when a wide trace ends on a narrower trace.

    The trace paths and their connections to other traces are really in the

    centre of the traces and 'fatten' in all directions with WIDTH. Hence a

    wider trace meeting a thinner trace will protrude.

     

    When the difference between the widths is not to much you can fix it the

    following way.

    Referring to your image.

    Use SPLIT on the vertical trace to make it a trace of two sections and then

    make the section that attaches to the horizonatal trace the same width as

    the horizonatal trace.

    Move the upper end of the wider vertical trace up onto the horizontal trace

    until it looks good..

    You will likely find you need to make the grid finer to place the trace end

    accurately.(Type in the command line GRID FINEST, position the  trace and

    then type GRID LAST to restore your grid setting).

     

    When the difference between the trace widths is large this technique needs

    an additional step.

    Use a polygon with the same NAME as the traces over the juction to make it

    look correct. You can even make the polygon shape such that the junction is

    blended (mitred).
