Newbie library question

Actually there is no "THE LARGE LIBRARY" as eagle provides about 300

libraries on installation. The path to the libraries directory is

entered in the eagle control panel/Options/Directories. Since this is

usually done automatically during installation, I assume you just did

not activate them, putting them IN USE.

In the command line at the top of your schematic just enter "USE *"

(without the " )and hit the "Enter" Key. After that you should see all

the libraries using the ADD command. If not, check the path as mentioned

above.

Thanks for your help with my Newbie question concerning the library. I did as instructed (USE command) and indeed it brought up the large list of libraries. In order to retrieve parts though, I next have to highlite one of the parts files, then right click and choose select. What happens next is that it automatically goes back to the schematic without the file I have chosen. If I type ADD in the sch. command line, I find the part file has been added to the screen that I thought should show up in the first place. This screen has the two smaller boxes on the right side which show symbol and package. I was thinking that all libraries should be available in this screen.

Am I missing a step, or taking too many?

Thanks to Joern & Jim,

You are exactly right. My ADD library is getting larger each time I access a part in the large (USE) library. It makes sense now as to what's happening and I thank you for your help. I certainly appreciate the help. I have watched several (many) tutorials and somehow these steps you have told me about were not shown. It is very much appreciated when others will stop what they are doing and take the time to help.

Once you have "used" all the libraries they should automatically appear

in the list when you click the add part icon from the schematic editor.

Note that in the add part selection you can define a search string (eg

"soic" which will search through all the currently used libraries for

parts that match the search parameters. You will often not find exactly

the part you want so its best to make your search terms pretty general

and refine from there.

AFAIK there is no right klick needed to get a device (part) but might be

configured. In your .sch you click on ADD and a window opens. Resize

that to your comfort. On the left you see the names of libraries and a

"+" in front of it. Click it i. e. on "74xx-us" to expand this library.

Now you see a "74*00" and expand that one too. A list of different

technologies of this device appears (74LS00,74ALS00 etc).

Once you mark (click) on one of these, the symbol and the package will

show in the right windows. To get this you either doubleclick the name

or you mark it and click OK at the bottom right on this window.

In the same moment the add window will close, you are back in your .sch

with the part clinging on your mousepointer. With another click you

place it on your .sch.

A different way was descibed by Jim already.

I suggest you work through the tutorial which comes with eagle in the

"doc" directory. Check also the www for eagle instructions or hit F1 for

the eagle help.

It is better to start easy to learn to use eagle instead of constructing

a 3000 Megawatt powerplant with frustration at the beginning
