Trouble with Eagle 6 on Ubuntu 10.04

I'm running 11.04 but I got the same error (missing libpng14.so.14).

Basically, I did this:

$ wget ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/eagle/program/6.0/eagle-lin-6.0.0.run

$ sed -e '1,/^__DATA__$/d' eagle-lin-6.0.0.run > eagle-lin-6.0.0.tar.bz2

$ tar xvjf eagle-lin-6.0.0.tar.bz2

$ cd eagle-6.0.0/bin

$ wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4295670/eagle_libs.tar.bz2

$ tar xvjf eagle_libs.tar.bz2

$ mv eagle eagle.orig

$ echo 'LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$(dirname "$0")" "$(dirname "$0")/eagle.orig" $@' > eagle

$ chmod a+x eagle

And now Eagle appears to run like normal.

P.S. I can't vouch for the authenticity/security of the eagle_libs files.  They poster seemed like a nice guy but use them at your own risk!

In some newer Linux distributions these libraries are not installed

by default. So you have to istall them....

System requirements:

Linux based on kernel 2.6 for Intel computers, X11 with a minimum

color depth of 8 bpp, 32-bit runtime environment with the following

libraries: libpng14.so.14, libssl.so.1.0.0, libcrypto.so.1.0.0,

libjpeg.so.8

Richard, it seems awfully optimistic to believe that more than one distro will have that exact combination of libraries available.

Well, most distros have... at least they had in the past.

ubuntu is the exception here....

Ubuntu isn't the exception: 4 out of the top 5 distros, and 8 of the top 10 don't have libpng14. Most are skipping from 12->15.

Fedora [1] (Red Hat, CentOS, etc.)

Debian (Ubuntu, Mint, etc.)

PCLinuxOS (currently, don't know future plans)

Mandriva

The following will have libpng14:

Puppy

OpenSUSE
