Trouble with Eagle 6 on Ubuntu 10.04

Former Member
Former Member over 14 years ago

I downloaded the .run file from the website today for Eagle 6, but when I tried to run it, I received this error:

/tmp/eagle-setup.6445/eagle-6.0.0/bin/eagle: error while loading shared libraries: libpng14.so.14: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

/tmp/eagle-setup.6445/eagle-6.0.0/bin/eagle: error while loading shared libraries: libpng14.so.14: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

I tried to follow the advice given for 11.04 (seen here: http://www.element14.com/community/message/41329#41329/l/re-solved-problem-trying-to-install-eagle-6-over-linux-ubuntu-1110), but for me, the command "tar xf" does not work on .txz files. When I manually extracted the contents of the file and ran the doinstall.sh, but it gives me more errors (namely, could not cd to usr/lib).
Any specific advice for 10.04?

    I'm running 11.04 but I got the same error (missing libpng14.so.14).

    I followed these instructions and they worked great: http://balubati.atw.hu/blog/index.php?entry=entry111108-115133

    Basically, I did this:

    $ wget ftp://ftp.cadsoft.de/eagle/program/6.0/eagle-lin-6.0.0.run

    $ sed -e '1,/^__DATA__$/d' eagle-lin-6.0.0.run > eagle-lin-6.0.0.tar.bz2

    $ tar xvjf eagle-lin-6.0.0.tar.bz2

    $ cd eagle-6.0.0/bin

    $ wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4295670/eagle_libs.tar.bz2

    $ tar xvjf eagle_libs.tar.bz2

    $ mv eagle eagle.orig

    $ echo 'LD_LIBRARY_PATH="$(dirname "$0")" "$(dirname "$0")/eagle.orig" $@' > eagle

    $ chmod a+x eagle

    And now Eagle appears to run like normal.

    Hope this helps.

        - Scott

    P.S. I can't vouch for the authenticity/security of the eagle_libs files.  They poster seemed like a nice guy but use them at your own risk!

    Hi,

    In some newer Linux distributions these libraries are not installed

    by default. So you have to istall them....

    System requirements:

    Linux based on kernel 2.6 for Intel computers, X11 with a minimum

    color depth of 8 bpp, 32-bit runtime environment with the following

    libraries: libpng14.so.14, libssl.so.1.0.0, libcrypto.so.1.0.0,

    libjpeg.so.8

    This worked for me! I have no clue what some of those commands did, but I ran them and the IDE opens now, lol image

    Jason Webb, you're too trusting.  image  It:

    - Downloads Eagle and manually extracts it

    - downloads the missing libraries (assembled by Márton Miklós?  See the URL I pasted, I don't speak Hungarian).

    - renames bin/eagle to bin/eagle.orig

    - creates a bin/eagle script that sets LD_LIBRARY_PATH to ensure the right libraries are loaded, then calls through to bin/eagle.orig

    and that's it.

    Richard, it seems awfully optimistic to believe that more than one distro will have that exact combination of libraries available.

    If you feel uncomfortable downloading binaries from an unknown source, I wrote a bash shell script to download the library sources from the official websites, build and copy to a directory which can then be included in LD_LIBRARY_PATH before installing or running Eagle 6. The howto is here: http://jdesbonnet.blogspot.com/2011/12/installing-cadsoft-eagle-6-on-ubuntu.html

    Well, most distros have... at least they had in the past.

    ubuntu is the exception here....

    Ubuntu isn't the exception: 4 out of the top 5 distros, and 8 of the top 10 don't have libpng14. Most are skipping from 12->15.

    Fedora [1] (Red Hat, CentOS, etc.)

    Debian (Ubuntu, Mint, etc.)

    PCLinuxOS (currently, don't know future plans)

    Mandriva

    The following will have libpng14:

    Puppy

    OpenSUSE

    Hi Jason,

    You can grab the libraries from one of the betas, I got them from 5.91.3

    and copied them into my usr/lib folder on my ubuntu 10.04 machine.

    Working like a champ now.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    I'm trying to get this running on Fedora 16 & it also doesn't have libpng14.  I built the png 14 library and tried to install it, but eagle didn't find it.  I tried to find the files in the beta directory, but didn't find 5.91.3 anymore.  I'm going to keep trying things, but this is frustrating.  I understand  that the files may not be able to be included for various reasons, but it is frustrating to buy software and not get great support for installing it.  I realize that simply griping doesn't help the situation so here are some suggestions:

    1. Offer instructions for the current Debian and Redhat distros (like Ubuntu & Fedora)
    2. Offer pre-built binaries of the extra needed libraries for 32 & 64 bit machines so we can copy them to the right location.
    3. Make the installer script pull the packages/libraries that are missing

    Any type of help will be welcome.
