Routing a PCB and from time to time, I get an X symbol over a via. Why does this happen? Thanks.

It's essentially an "unroute" wire at a single point, indicating a
connection is desired from one layer to another. If you place a via, it
makes this connection. If you then later ripup the via, the top/bottom
traces that were formerly connected no longer are, thus an "X" unroute
shows up to let you know there needs to be a connection there.
If you do a ratsnest then "X" symbols that are no longer needed will go
away.

The via is there, and the X is there too at the same time.
