How would one change the default shape of a via?
The user manual describes some properties in .eaglerc, but I have not
found one related to the default via shape.
Thanks,
- Chuck

Hi Chuck,
Use the eagle.scr file found under the scripts tree in the control
panel. Go ahead and open it and on the next line after BRD: type in the
following.
CHANGE SHAPE ROUND;
Instead of round you can put SQUARE, OCTAGON, etc.
Save the eagle.scr file. This script file is special because it runs
every time a new editor is opened, so it's good for setting up defaults
like this. By putting it after the BRD: heading it will only affect the
board.

Good morning, Jorge,
Thanks for the tip. It worked exactly as described.
Do you know of a user-specific file that could be edited in a similar
manner, perhaps a file that doesn't get overwritten on each update/upgrade?
Thanks,
- Chuck

Hi Chuck,
I hope you are doing well. Unfortunately no, the eagle.scr file is
unique. What some users do is keep a backup of it and then when they
install a new version they just swap it out.

You can place your preferences into a script and give it a unique name.
Locate it in a personal path for scripts.
Then in eagle.scr add the line to call your script.
In this way should the next versin of eagle overwrite eagle.scr all you have
to do is add one line to the new eagle.scr to call your script
Remember eagle.scr is not run in all cases when opening a design file. Some
people add a custom menu item in the text command menu so that with one
click you can run that script and get back your default settings

You can place your preferences into a script and give it a unique name.
Locate it in a personal path for scripts.
Then in eagle.scr add the line to call your script.
That it! I didn't realize that calls to scripts can be nested. I'll
have to give it a shot.
To date, the most I've used scripts for is to define pad layouts. I've
been known to write a quick C program or shell script that generates the
exact pad layout and outline for a particular device. One of the more
interesting applications is the layout for Samtec's CLM and MW series of
board-to-board connectors. The female side is designed for bottom entry
such that the header pins come through the circuit board and into the
connector. So not only were there the usual pads and component outline
to generate, but there were also non-plated holes in the board.
Some
people add a custom menu item in the text command menu so that with one
click you can run that script and get back your default settings
I haven't messed around with custom menus. I perused a few of the
sample scripts that deal with this and it looks interesting.
Thanks for the help.

I added
CHANGE SHAPE ROUND;
to the BRD section of my eagle.scr file, but it didn't set the default via to round. Is there a way to verify if the eagle.scr file is used when I open eagle? I've got the Eagle Scripts directory setup like this (I'm on a mac):
$EAGLEDIR/scr:/Users/Scott/Documents/Eagle/scr
The path + filename is:
/Users/Scott/Documents/Eagle/scr/eagle.scr
I'm on Eagle ver 7.3.0
