Pad Dimension Errors - New User

Former Member
Former Member over 13 years ago

Hi,

I'm new to Eagle.  I've searched for an answer to this, but maybe I don't know enough to search for the correct terms.

I built a package in the library for a through hole header with 1.27 mm spacing and 0.7 mm holes, as per the manufacturer's datasheet.

If I allow Eagle to set the pad size, it sets it to 1.2 mm.  That leaves only 0.07 mm of spacing between pads -- not enough.

If I manually set the pad size to 1.0 mm in the library, it does not change in the board and I stll get DRC errors.

I've gone through the DRC dimensions and sizes and don't see anything that would cause this.  Besides, it seems to be elsewhere because the change in the board occurs before I do a DRC.

Can anyone give me pointers or direct me to documentation that would help me?

Thanks!

Dave

Do not use the "auto"-parameter for the pad-diameter. The DRC changes all

Always set your own pad diameter.

Thanks for the reply.  But I said:

"If I manually set the pad size to 1.0 mm in the library, it does not change in the board and I stll get DRC errors."

So setting the pad size manually doesn't work for those dimensions.

The DRC rules always come into play. The final size on the board is the

'larger' of your pad diameter set in the library package or the size

calculated by the DRC settings based on the drill diameter. Said the other

way around, you can only control the pad diameter in the library if it

exceeds the one calculated by the DRC. So for a given hole size you will

need to change the restring percentage figure to reduce the pad diameter.

This figure will apply to all pads on the board.

    Hi Warren,

Yes, that helped a lot.  I went back to the manual and studied up on Restring and distance, then tried some things until I understood what was happening.

Not sure if I can get this board fabbed yet, but I'm learning.

Thanks to you and Josef-Michael for helping to educate me.

    Regards,

    Dave
