Mac 6.2 Backup and Auto Save

Hi,

I just lost about 4 hours of work from last night because my files

weren't saved when I closed Eagle. I have Auto Save Interval set to 5

min.and Automatically Save Project File set. These functions either are

not working, or I don't understand what they do. Here are some

questions that I can't find an answer to in the manual.

1) If the number of backup files are set to 9, and you have filled the

9 slots, what happens next? Does Eagle write over the old backups or

just stop autobacking up. In my case Eagle stopped autobacking the

files.

2) If a backup file is generated, is the active file also saved?

3) If Automatically Save Project File is set, does this save the board

and schematic files? In my case this definitely did not happen.

4) If a file is changed (schematic, library, or board) is it marked as

"dirty" and will Eagle generate a dialog asking to save the file when

the file is being closed? This seems to happen erratically. Sometimes

yes, sometimes no.

Thanks

    Anyone home?

I just noticed that Eagle hasn't autobackedup anything for the past two

    days. Does this feature work?

slots, what happens next? Does Eagle write over the old backups or just

stop autobacking up. In my case Eagle stopped autobacking the files.

When you reach the max number of backups eagle will then overwrite 1,

it's always the most recent backup. It won't loop through the sequence

it will just overwrite 1, so that would explain why it may appear that

eagle hasn't backed up in a while, look at the first back up #1.

    2) If a backup file is generated, is the active file also saved?

This requires some clarification. Let's say you set your save interval

to 5 minutes. EAGLE counts this time from the last save, so if you save

every three minutes for 30 minutes then EAGLE will not generate a backup

during that time span because 5 minutes do not elapse from any given save.

If more than 5 minutes elapse from the last save and you make a change

eagle creates a x## file the next time you save it will become x#1. If

you don't save the x## file will still be there and that will be your

    most recent backup.

This behaviour should also explain what you're seeing, with long gaps

    between backups.

    3) If Automatically Save Project File is set, does this save the board

and schematic files? In my case this definitely did not happen.

This option will only save the board and schematic files if they're

defined as a Project. A project will appear as a red folder in the EAGLE

control panel, not a yellow folder. The main difference is that a

project folder contains a file with a .epf extension. If you're just

saving your files to ordinary folders and not saving them as projects

then this option doesn't apply and your work won't be automatically saved.

    4) If a file is changed (schematic, library, or board) is it marked as

"dirty" and will Eagle generate a dialog asking to save the file when

the file is being closed? This seems to happen erratically. Sometimes

    yes, sometimes no.

If a change has been made to the file then yes EAGLE does mark the file

as "dirty" and the dialog should appear warning you.

    Thanks

    Hi Joe,

I've answered your questions inline above.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    Thanks for the response.

So, if Eagle crashes (like it did today when I tried to Disapprove some

errors in the DRC check, actually it froze and I had to force quit),

and so the file is not saved, the latest backup will actually be x##

    and not x#1. Right?

That is correct assuming more than 5 minutes had elapsed from the last save.
