Allow creating a schematic without creating a board

I sometimes just want to create a schematic, to demonstrate signal flow, a system overview, or as a refrence for a freewired system. I find myself troubled by the workaround that I have to do to make this work.

 

I would like to be able to create library parts that do not have a physical package, and put them into the schematic. Currently as a workaround, I create the parts that I want, and just randomly connect them to a package that has 200+ pads.

 

It is possible to make boards without schematics. Why is it not possible to do it the otherway around?
