Eagle 6.4.0: extremely slow conversion of big libraries

Not sure if it is bug or just extreme code inefficiency, but conversion of big libraries to new XML format takes very long time in Eagle 6.4.0 (on Windows 7 64-bit). For example, this 10 MB library takes about 14 minutes image to open on Core i7 processor at 3.2 GHz:

http://www.cadsoftusa.com/downloads/file/xilinx_devices_105.zip

In fact, I thought Eagle simply freezed (locked up) at first. But then I left it going over my lunch break and when I returned, the library was converted. After I saved it in XML format, the library bloated to 40 MB, but seems to work OK. Still, I don't think such a long conversion time is normal, especially when a bit smaller (around 1 MB) libraries convert in some 4 seconds on the same PC.

I tried this on two different PC (the other running Windows XP 32-bit), but it is the same on both.

    Hi Caleb,

I hope you're doing well. That's a very comprehensive library of Xilinx

devices and it takes a while to perform the initial conversion from the

closed binary format to XML. Once it's in XML format it opens much faster.

File sizes did increase by going to XML about 4x which is what you

experienced. In this age of terabyte hard drives we figured it was a

good trade off for the convenience of the XML. When dealing with large

libraries this for now is the norm, it's not a bug. We're looking into

ways of speeding up these operations for a future release.

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

I see. Well, if you fail to speed it up considerably, please at least let the user know that the conversion is in progress (possibly with typical "percentage left" bar?). Like I said, I thought Eagle locked up at first and it was sheer luck I left the conversion run so long.

    Hi Caleb,

That is an excellent idea. So far this is the only library I've run into

that takes so long. Granted it's probably one of the largest libraries

    up on our website.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia
