Why no single key shortcuts?

autodeskguest

If Eagle were to require the user to click within the command box before

entering command line text (instead of the command line always being "hot")

that would free up the use of SINGLE key keyboard shortcuts.

As is, having to use one or more modifiers (ie ALT, CTL, SHIFT) means that

after the user has programmed the more easily remembered / easily reached

shortcuts, he soon has to start using more difficult key combinations -or

else do without having a full complement of shortcuts for all available

commands. (sigh)

I have to make a choice between having keyboard chortcuts for various grid

and width (etc.) settings, or command shortcuts. There just aren't enough

easily fingered keyboard combinations available to cover all bases.

I know it would require a lot of coding, but the Options Assign feature of

Eagle could be much more powerful.

This is silly. The original poster has perfectly legitimate reasons to not want the command prompt always in focus. You do realize that Eagle is a mouse heavy application? Or am I using it incorrectly? Taking my hand off the mouse is the same side of the coin, I still have to change my hands to type in a command. Do what chrome has done, use a keyboard shortcut to bring the command line into focus. Make it a simple Function key. Then let those of us with the creative clicking and dragging to keep our one hand on the mouse and the other able to do single key shortcuts.

The ergonomics of this application really hasn't been streamlined and I think my suggestion is a compromise between those of us desiring single key shortcuts and those still wanting quick access to the commands.

Most of us that use EAGLE a lot probably have a pretty streamlined workflow which relies heavily on the command line, and there is always resistance to people who want to change things in a way which breaks peoples workflow. That said, I think your suggestion is quite sensible and allows both methods of working to co-exist. Now, this thread is from 2013 so it's 4 years old and EAGLE has changed ownership from Farnell to Autodesk and they are adding features at a crazy rate so you never know what might happen!
