Another great option is to join multiple package pads to a single symbol pin. Note EAGLE this feature was only introduced in version 6.
Notice how pads 8 18 30 38 and 45 are all connected to the symbol GND. When connecting package pads and symbol pins you can select multiple pads using shift (or ctrl I think). You can also select existing connections and "APPEND" additional pads. To each's own.
And here is the end result. You get a schematic symbol that has no redundant pins, which makes for cleaner, and more robust designs.
