OSX Yosemite and slow zooming with 6.6.0

autodeskguest
autodeskguest over 11 years ago

I've updated my OS to 10.10 and while everything went smoothly, I have

noticed that Eagle 6.6.0 now absolutely CRAWLS when it comes to zooming.

The best description I can give is that the zoom (particuarly zooming

out) "lags" behind the trackpad.  e.g. if I have a board file open and

zoom out to show more of the board, I may have only pinched my fingers

together on the trackpad for 1/3s, but it takes the GUI a good 2 or 3

seconds to stop zooming out.

Panning is still very fast, but the zoom is now very very very slow.

I've tried turning off transparency in the system preferences but this

had no effect. On the off chance that it was something very obscure I

also reset the NVRAM and did an SMC reset of the mac.  It's a 2012 core

i7 Macbook Air with 8GB of memory, so the machine itself is no slowpoke

and no other application appears to have this issue.

I do not yet have Eagle 7.1.0, although I am downloading it currently

to test. I'm not yet ready to upgrade, and in all honestly I don't

think I will upgrade. 7.1.0 does not have any new features that I would

like, so the $700 price tag is not at all appealing. It's a pity, I've

been a very happy user of Eagle for over a decade now, but that's the

subject for another post...

Has anyone else seen this? Does anyone have any suggestions on what to

try or how to gather more information to help the Eagle development

team figure out what's going on?

Regards,

Andrew

I just gave 7.1.0 a try. Exact same problem. Very laggy zooming,

    especially zooming out.

BTW, If you install Eagle 7.1.0, it blows away your 6.6.0 directory,

even though the 7.1.0 application installs in its own directory.

There's no reason for that, bad installer!

We'll be updating our GUI libraries in the coming months for the release

of V7.2 and 7.3 this should help us correct these issues we're seeing on

    the MAC.

That is a bad installer, I've already reported it to the devs. Looks

like the package manager hasn't been updated yet. I'll contact them

again to see if in the meantime, a note can be added to the installer to

make the user aware of this possibility.

    Hi Jorge

Can you please push to get 7.2.0 out as soon as possible, I'm on Mavericks (10.9) and then need to cmd-tab in and out of eagle to get the screen to refresh is already pretty irritating, sounds like it gets worse on Yosemite.

The beta was out for a long time, so I hope the solution is just round the corner?

    Thanks

    Ed

I also have the same sluggish zoom behaviour on both Eagle 6.1 and 7.1 under Yosemite.

I would hope the this is something that is quickly fixed by Cadsoft, I'm sure the will be quite a few frustrated mac users out there

I'm nervous to suggest this only because it may delay the actual fix,

but I've found that "wi 0.5" or "wi 2" to zoom out/in are very fast

(and you can use other numeric factors) -- not as nice as pinch zooming

    but also not maddenningly slow.

Just an update to this; I've tried this with my hackintosh (which uses

an ancient nVidia 8400GS) and Eagle 6.6.0 is speedy when zooming in and

    out.

It looks like it's something Yosemite did with the Intel graphics

driver that Eagle is unhappy with.

If you turn on Legacy Mouse wheel support zooming is nice and fast, except you now lose panning.

I suspect Yosemite adjusted how pinch to zoom works and is now sending many more times the number of zoom requests it used, to provide a smooth zooming experience.  For example I can clearly see a speed and elastic spring acceleration effect on zoom.  Eagle simply can't keep up with the new number of requests to do micro-changes in the zoom level, queues the messages and lags.

Is there any update of a fix for the sluggish zooming?  It is very frustrating.

    Nothing yet,

But developers are wearing down their fingers typing as we speak,

towards V7.3 which should bring relief.

As soon as something is available, I will reply to this thread with a

link, to the first beta so that you guys can check to make sure this is

    improved.
