Eagle cad alternative?

I have been quite happy with the program as a whole, except my PC just cant stand it.

Freeze up's, super laggy, to complete crashes. I can just open a project up, let it sit on my laptop, and it will be frozen when i get back a few minutes later.

So, what would be your guy's second choice?

I know of KICAD, LTSPICE, but i don't know what to choose.

And i am open to any other free/open software you may recommend.

That is just the three that i have herd of.image

So, what would be your next TWO runners up, and why?

imageP.S. if it had a simulator, that would be great.

    I decided to try KICAD.

I have only been messing with it a day, but it will dew i guess, it is no eagle, but it's not crashing ether. So, at least i have "transfered" 5 projects into it sofar.

My pc dosent have any problems running heavy programs, no over heating, no ram malfunctions, nothing.

And i use very taxing programs too.

It simply don't like the coding that eagle has. Thats all.

    It happens some times.

But just for the sake of it, i have ran a burn in test overnight(8 hrs strait), than the next night i ran aquamark's looped test for 8 hr's. no hang up's, or nothing.

So, mabe KICAD will work for me.

    hi,

I run Eagle on my PC at home (linux), on my laptop (linux, complete different hardware), and at work on an older pc (windows XP until last month, win 7 since).

I also run AUTOCAD at work and on my laptop :

Conclusion : EAGLE has no trouble on any of these computer, it's fast on it and need very very few resources. Autocad need far more resources !

I think you should follow the Baron's advice and check your SMART on your HD. Why ?

    Because

    1) your Burn test will not test very single cluster of your HD (unless you run a test that will erase all you  hard disk !!!)

    2) if your HD had some bad cluster or mechanical trouble, unless you read that cluster, or the part that is mechanically damaged , your PC will seems fine. That would explain why only EAGLE and AUTOCAD had some trouble. If HD has some difficulties to read, it manage to read after some retry ( and so it seems slow)  until one day the data is lost for ever and then my friend, hope for you that it was not critical data.

Some year ago, I had a dying hard-disk (it wasn't old few months) , and believe me I had the same symptoms. No burn test found anything, but just a read of the SMART report explain everything (I had some reallocated cluster : some cluster where dead and they are replaced by spares ones).

My advice : I would check that point, because using kicad would only mask the problem... and a HD crash with all you data is really a pain in the ass...  And if there is no error, you will be sure of it !

I don't know how you can read the SMART report on Win (on Linux it's easy: type smartctl -all /dev/sda in a console)
