Eagle 7.6.0 constantly crashing - what to do?

tomstorey

Hi everyone. I'm at a loss as to how to handle this situation.

I'd been using Eagle freeware for about a month flawlessly, but over the last two weeks or so I can barely do more than 5 minutes of work without it crashing and burning (well, not exactly burning.)

Simple things like zooming in and out of a schematic, scrolling in a schematic, or even clicking on a button on a toolbar will cause it to crash. So far I've spent most of my time in the schematic editor, so I'm not 100% sure if it also happens in the PCB editor.

I'm running it on a Mac (10.10), and I was also seeing the same problem with 7.5.0. Rather conveniently 7.6.0 came out not long after I started seeing the crashes with 7.5.0, so I upgraded hoping that might help, but alas, 7.6.0 had the exact same problem.

I tried restarting, I completely deleted the Eagle application folder and re-installed, but neither of those did anything to help. Can anyone suggest anything else?

The first tell-tale signs its about to happen are when I start to see graphical glitches, like that in the attached screenshot. Then, a couple of clicks later, boom - crash. I'm at the stage where I'm constantly saving my work in fear of losing it.

I'm really really liking Eagle, and Ive been considering purcashing a license, but if its going to behave like this, I dunno ....... image

Many thanks.

Tom

Eagle 7.6.0 running on a Hac (yes Hac) with OSX 10.10.5 Yosemite and two monitors is stable here, no unexpected crashes. I can crash it, I avoid the one situation that I know is a problem. Starting eagle…

I found that Ken Tyler's suggestion (above) actually worked for me. While it is a "workaround" solution, I'm finding that after resizing both the schematic and PCB layout windows, I am usually able to…

    Hello!

New post to this thread here: I, too am having the same crash symptom as all of you.

Although I have learned from 25 years in the Electronics Hardware Industry to never assume that a similar symptom for different systems (or different users) has the same root cause, this particular bug or symptom sounds to me like the timing of this crash being reported is no coincidence and is likely the same root cause / source of trouble.

I have been using Eagle for nearly three years. I went from the freeware to a Hobbyist license after a few months, then to the professional license just recently (at the end of June 2016 this year). However, just days after upgrading to the Professional version, I started experiencing regular crashes.

    MacBookPro 2011 with 16GB memory.

The problem occurs regardless of whether I use a dual monitor system or not.

The problem occurs regardless of whether I use a wired mouse, or wireless mouse, or native Mac mouse, or native Mac trackpad.

The problem occurs almost always when panning/scrolling (not zooming, but pan/scroll).

The problem occurs regardless of whether File Locking is enabled or disabled.

The problem is intermittent (in other words, it is not easily reproducible), however when it starts to crash, I will reopen and then the crashing continues more frequently (much more reproducible from that point on).

The problem occurs even when I reboot my MBP, regardless of whether other Apps are running, regardless of internet connection, regardless of the wireless radio transceivers switched on or off, regardless of have the MBP laptop power supply plugged in.

In other words, I have tried every action and config that I can think of to narrow down the trigger events as a user, with no only the following conclusion: as of this date/time: It mainly happens when scrolling/panning (not zooming).

    Hi All,

Has anyone tried EAGLE 7.6.2? Does the issue continue there?

Also as an aside, the file-locking feature is disabled by default so it

shouldn't cause any more issues for those that don't need it(the

    majority of you).

    hth,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Eric,

I may have asked you this before so I apologize if that's the case. Do

you have Roboform or conduit installed? These programs are known to

    interfere with EAGLE.

Another idea, because I know you've been following this issue for a while.

Try installing the Windows version of EAGLE and running it under

XQuartz. I know it doesn't feel right but it should at least allow you

to continue working on your files while we get this sorted out.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

I do not have Roboform or Conduit installed.

I will consider running it under windows, as I do use Parallels for Mac and have a stable ver of Win-7 installed... that is an idea for a medium-term solution until the root cause of the issue is resolved.
