I'm stuck, can't even open a .brd

I've just installed v7.4.0 free at Linux x86_64. My very first try was to open a .brd dl'ed from the net, just for program function testing.

It responded with a small window (error message?) visible for less than half a second, then quit. Impossible to catch.

Same reaction with a .sch

Any idea, anyone, how to catch it anyway?

Grtz, Soeren

Random thought - was that actually the VERY FIRST THING you did after

installing? Because if so, it's wrong. You need to run Eagle, just once,

as root so that you can select the license type ("free" in your case),

otherwise it won't run as a normal user.

    Hi Guest,

Here is - at the start of that VERY FIRST RUN - what I understand as a license confirmation. It appeared almost by itself.

    --------------------

    Single User License #62191E841E-LSR-WLM-1EL
    FOR EDUCATIONAL USE ONLY!

    Registered to:
    Freeware license for "non-profit"
    and evaluation purposes. See the
    file "freeware.key" or the URL
    "www.cadsoft.de/freeware.htm"

    --------------------

It appears anytime I launch Eagle so far, and I haven't involved any su-operations.

    I'm still mystified ...

    Hi Guest again,

    Please skip my former comment:

I have now entered Eagle as root, selected a freeware license, and restarted. Trying to open a .brd made the same small elusive window appear shortly.

    Still perplexed ...

    Hi,

I just upgraded Eagle from v7.4.0 to v7.6.0

Problem gone, now .brd files open as expected

    Many thanks to all commenters.

    Greetings, Soeren

    hi Soeren,

the file you sent is okay. It's a V5 file that can be loaded here

    without any problems.

Can you give me more details about your linux? Which system, window

    manager?
