Eagle 7.7 Access is denied

ande
ande over 9 years ago

Hi,

When updated to 7.7 I can't save or open files. When opening it says: Locking of  (folder location) schem_2.sch failed. Access is denied.

And when closing Eagle 7.7 it says : Can't open (Folder  ) eaglerc.~~~   -> Permission denied.

I haven't change any folder options and older version are working just ok.

You can easily reopen the files. Just follow the advice in the message window.

This is a new "feature" in 7.7.0 from Autodesk. image

The file locking cough "feature" cough was much earlier in the 7.x

release series and has caused lots of people to have issues. The best

advice is to just turn the darn thing off in the preferences and never

think about it again. If it's still being problematic I think there is a

lock file you can delete to get around the locking?

I don't think there is anything new in 7.7 that Autodesk specifically added

is there? I thought they just changed the default so that feature was

    turned off by default?

    Best Regards,

    Rachael

    Hi,

I've never had this problem before V7.7.0
Once I also was in this "bird trap".

"Are you the owner?" "Another user has ..." "" "uff ,,, uff ,,,,
I know that from Autodesk (in the 19xx, the software was closed with hardware dongles) but not from Cadsoft.

File Locking is since V7.5 default. "HELP File-Locking".

This is a property to prevent two users from editing the same

file at the same time. It has nothing to do with the licensing.

ok, i understand. Yes you're right, i remember about this.

I'm a single user (1 workstation) with single license.

And all projects are coming from me with my username.

    Hm....

    Best Regards

With regard to the original question, the first symptom is definitely being

triggered by the file locking system being unable to create the lock file

but reading the query again it seems there are other file permissions

issues as it is also unable to access the eaglerc file upon closing.... So

this isn't being caused by the file locking mechanism I don't think. I've

not seen any issues like this with 7.7 myself and I haven't seen any other

reports of people having this issue so I think this is something relating

to their system somehow. This is probably one for the support guys to try

    and help out with....

    Hello Antti,

I hope you're doing well. What operating system are you using? If you

are on Windows, did you allow EAGLE to install to the root of C like it

    wants to by default?

The second symptom definitely looks like a permissions issue with the OS.

For the first one, just disable file locking completely. If a .lck file

was created then even if the feature is disabled EAGLE will still

respect it. In that case you have to go delete the .lck file.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    Hi Jorge,

I thought it was just file locking when I first looked at it but it's

actually getting an access denied error when trying to create the lock

which I think means this is related to the second issue too.

    Best Regards,

I would like to hear the argument that resulted in a persistent lock

from the use of a file as a boolean indicator.  The lockf(3) function is

a POSIX standard function specifically designed to acquire, release, and

test for locks.  And guess what... these locks are released by the

kernel when the file is closed.  Since it's POSIX, it works on all three

supported platforms and across all file systems (NFS, SMB, NTFS, FATxx,

    extx, jffs, and many others).

    See: https://linux.die.net/man/3/lockf

So, why jump into all the problems associated with a persistent lock

when such is best handled by a change management system (SCCS, RCS,

    Perforce, and many, many, others)?

A question best posed to Jorge: by what process of ratiocination did the

developers arrive at the conclusion that a using the presence or absence

of a file is the best file locking method?  I'd like to hear their

    reason - maybe there's something I'm missing.

I have to agree with you on this one. I think I have been clear about my

thoughts on this feature many times. It's a very 1990's approach to solving

the problem of multiple people sharing the same design files. EAGLE isn't

the only ECAD tool to have been afflicted by this, I seem to remember some

of the very old Mentor Graphics tools did a similar thing if I am not

mistaken but we are going back a long long way and nothing they have

produced in probably the last decade or so works in this way.

    Best Regards,
