Selecting objects in dense areas (Eagle 8)

In previous versions of Eagle, when selecting objects with other objects close by, you would be prompted: "Select highlighted object? (left=yes, right=next, ESC=cancel)".

I'm no longer getting this even if the origin of the object is right over another origin.  Was this feature changed or disabled?  It is still described in the help docs.

    Hello Isaac,

In the latest versions of EAGLE this feature has been modified. Do

perform a cycle selection, hold down the alt key and left click to cycle

through the various nearby items. This assumes the group command is active.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

Just curious: what's the benefit of breaking such a basic method of operation?

Cycling through a densely populated area with the right mouse button used to be doable

with one hand. Now it requires two hands! Is that Autodesk's idea of "improvement"?

Is there at least a switch that allows the user to fall back to the original method?

And what does "This assumes the group command is active" mean? Does this not work if

the group command is not active?

    Hi Klaus,

Nice to hear from you again. First off, this is an alternative group

paradigm, and you can get the old behavior back by going to Options >

Set > Misc Tab uncheck the group default on option.

Basically under this paradigm the GROUP command behaves like a select

tool in photoshop or similar graphical programs. The idea is that this

behavior for many new users will seem more natural and will lower the

learning curve to get up to speed with EAGLE. Following this paradigm,

if no other command is active then GROUP is active, it has quite a few

other changes to it. For example, if you have a group defined and hit

the delete key on the keyboard those objects will be deleted. Also if

you have group defined if you left-click and hold you can immediately

move the group. There's a few more updates which as you know you can

    check in the Update file.

Let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.

    Best Regards,

    Jorge Garcia

    ...

Thanks for the info. The most important thing here is that it can be

disabled and one can get back the original behavior - assuming they

didn't break anything in the process ;-).

For me personally it doesn't really matter, because V7 will probably

work just fine for anything I'll ever do, and I wouldn't even touch a

subscription license with a ten foot pole...
