Cannot move groups

axnfell
axnfell over 8 years ago

First off I am VERY new to Eagle, come from a Proteus background, but have been asked to put some of my schematics into Eagle format for others to work on.

I am trying to follow some really basic tutorials on Eagle to get my head around it but have stumbled at the first video....

How do you 'Move' and 'Group'?

All I get is an annoying 'Boing' from the computer every time I try to select a group, and nothing is getting selected, I have looked at the help section and I should be able to select the group, then 'Ctrl+Right Click' to move the group, again all I get is a 'Boing' from the computer and nothing happens!

I have tried just putting 2 resistors on the screen and I can move each one without any issues, but try to select both and I get a 'Boing'.

This is becoming very annoying, especially as something this basic I should be able to sort out but I must be doing something wrong?

Any help would be much appreciated

Feeling stupid!

James

    Hello,

You are right, as of v8 there is a new way to be able to do grouping /

moving. Unfortunately this new functionality changes other things which

have a negative overall impact on productivity so almost all experienced

users will go turn this feature right back off again straight away in the

    settings.

Options -> Set... -> Misc Tab, uncheck then "Group Command Default On"

    option.

The original way is really simple:

    1. Select MOVE.

    2. Select GROUP and then create either a rectangular group my dragging

around an area or an arbitrary shaped group by clicking points.

    3. Ctrl + Right Click (Cmd on macOS) and the MOVE function previously

selected will be actioned on the selected group and you can drag it around

    and place it.

Now, having to go click on icons in the toolbar, thus taking your mouse

away from where you were wanting it in your design can slow you down, so

this is why almost all experienced users will have keyboard shortcuts set

up to initial MOVE, COPY, PASTE, GROUP, etc and if you have a mouse with

extra programmable buttons you can usually find ways to assign things to

these buttons so you don't even need two hands.

    Best Regards,

    Rachael
